Self-Guided Walks Around Nice
Nice rewards walking more than almost any city on the coast, and the four routes below cover market square, hilltop fortress ruins, pine forest and cliff path without repeating ground.
Old Town and Cours Saleya (2-3 hours)
Begin at Place Garibaldi, with its trompe-l’œil facades, and head down Rue Pairolière to Place Saint-François, the historic fish market square with its communal fountain. Continue to Place Rossetti, where Cathédrale Sainte-Réparate’s coloured tile dome faces Fenocchio’s gelato counter, over 90 flavours strong, then follow Rue Droite past Palais Lascaris and Rue Saint-François de Paule, lined with confectioners trading since the 1800s, toward Cours Saleya’s market stalls. The streets are entirely stone-paved and pedestrian; flat shoes matter more here than anywhere else on this list, and neither bicycles nor scooters can navigate the narrowest alleys.
Castle Hill (1.5-2 hours)
The 213 steps of Montée Lesage climb beside Tour Bellanda to the 93m summit, where an 1885 artificial waterfall and the ruins of the fortress demolished in 1706 sit inside a public park, not a standing castle. The free lift at 1 Rue des Ponchettes runs 10:00-17:25 for the way down; after that it’s stairs. Perimeter paths look out over Port Lympia and Mont Boron.
Mont Boron to Fort du Mont Alban (2.5-3.5 hours)
From Boulevard Carnot at the east end of Port Lympia, or Bus 30’s Mont Boron stop (routes and fares at lignesdazur.com ), the route climbs through Aleppo pine forest in the 57-hectare Parc du Mont Boron to the 16th-century Fort du Mont Alban at 220m elevation, with views west over Nice and east over Cap Ferrat and Villefranche. Bring water; there are no cafes or fountains once the pine forest starts, and the climb runs a good hour each way at an unhurried pace.
Sentier du Littoral (1.5 hours)
From Coco Beach east of Port Lympia, a path cut into limestone cliffs runs around Cap de Nice toward Villefranche; it closes during heavy swells, so check conditions before a windy-day walk. Route maps and closures are posted at nicetourisme.com .

The verdict

Before you go
Wear closed, flat shoes for all four routes; the Old Town’s stone paving and the Mont Alban trail are equally unforgiving of sandals.
