Six gems, half in the city and half on the regional map
The obvious Montreal sights get all the foot traffic; these six are the ones day-trip-base travelers actually remember. Free or cheap in the city, genuinely underrated once you’re out on the road.
In the city, before you leave
Mount Royal Cemetery, the Protestant burial ground laid out in 1852 on the mountain’s north slope (don’t confuse it with the adjacent Catholic Notre-Dame-des-Neiges Cemetery next door), is free to walk, quiet, and has some of the best skyline views on the mountain without the crowds at the Kondiaronk Belvedere. Jean-Talon Market in Little Italy is one of North America’s largest open-air markets, produce, cheese, and prepared-food stalls, best visited in the morning before tour groups arrive. Atwater Market, Art Deco and canal-side, is the calmer alternative, the same quality of produce plus a rooftop terrace in summer.
The day trips most visitors skip
Trois-Rivières, on the same VIA Rail line as Quebec City, gets treated as a stop along the way when it’s actually a real day trip on its own terms, about 1.5 hours out, with its own historic core. Montérégie / Mont-Saint-Hilaire, only 40-45 minutes from the city, is the closest true day trip and the one most visitors never make time for, apple orchards and cider producers at their best in early fall. Montebello / Parc Omega, about 2 hours west, pairs a wildlife park with the Fairmont Château Montebello if you’d rather make it an overnight than a there-and-back day. The Balnea spa in the Eastern Townships, 1-2 hours southeast along the wine route, is a genuine off-the-radar relaxation stop most itineraries skip entirely. And sugar shacks (cabane à sucre), spring only, late February through April, are a real Quebec tradition that disappears from the map the rest of the year, worth timing a spring trip around if you can.
