A Danube Bend Discovery (2-3 Days)
Szentendre’s artists’ colony and Visegrád’s royal palace ruins anchor a slower version of the same route a day-tripper rushes through in one long day. Hike the hills overlooking the river, visit the castles properly, and sample local wine without watching the clock for a return train.
Etyek Wine Region (1-2 Days)
Hungary’s own “Champagne region” sits a short train ride from Budapest, close enough for an overnight rather than a full expedition. Eger and the Bükk Mountains (2-3 Days)
Eger Castle and the baroque city center pair with a soak in the thermal baths of Egerszalók, plus a hike through the Bükk Mountains. Tokaj, Given the Overnight It Needs

Somló, a real wine region roughly 165km from Budapest, sits near Lake Balaton, and it pairs naturally with a Balaton extended stay rather than standing alone as a Budapest-adjacent trip.

The Hungarian Puszta’s vastness, traditional horse shows, and villages like Hortobágy fill a multi-day trip built around horseback riding and paprika-heavy meals, a genuinely different pace from anything closer to the city.
Planning Notes
Rent a car for flexibility, or lean on Hungary’s train network for everything above except the Puszta’s more rural stretches. MÁV’s own site sells tickets for Eger and Tokaj alike. Currency is the forint throughout; pay in HUF rather than euro even where a shop nominally takes both, since the exchange rate offered runs worse.
