Multi-Day Trips From Marrakech to the Sahara

Anything that requires crossing the Tizi n’Tichka Pass plus a desert night stops being a day trip and starts being a real commitment, and it’s worth planning it that way rather than squeezing it into a rushed itinerary.
The Sahara, which is never a day trip
Merzouga, home to Erg Chebbi’s big dunes, is roughly 560km and a genuine 9-10 hours each way; the standard product is a 2-night, 3-day round trip with an overnight stop near the Dades or Todra Gorge on each leg. Shared group tours with half-board and a sunset camel trek run roughly 95-200 euros per person, rising to 500-800 euros or more for a private, luxury version. Zagora, with smaller dunes near Tinfou, is roughly 350km and 6-7 hours each way, still not day-trippable but shorter and cheaper than Merzouga; the standard 2-day, 1-night round trip runs roughly 65-125 euros per person.
Ait Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate, as an overnight
The same 3-4 hour drive each way as the rushed day-trip version, but staying overnight removes the 10-12 hour round-trip slog and suits anyone continuing on toward the desert route.
Essaouira, as a coastal stay
The same 2.5-3 hour route as the day-trip version, but one or two nights actually lets you enjoy the coast, the working fishing port and the seafood rather than turning straight around.
Onward to Fez and Casablanca
Casablanca is a straightforward 2 hour 40 minute to 3 hour train on ONCF , Morocco’s national rail operator. Fez’s direct train is a slow 10-11 hours via Casablanca, so flying, or looping through the desert route via Merzouga over several days, is the realistic way to link the two cities rather than a same-day hop.
What doesn’t belong here
Don’t stretch a Marrakech stay into a fake “Day 5-6: more Marrakech” structure and call it a multi-day trip; every extra day beyond the city itself should be a genuine overnight somewhere new.
Verdict: build a Merzouga loop around 3 days minimum, or take the shorter Zagora version if your schedule is tighter.
