Naples Adventure Sports on a Budget
Adrenaline here is cheaper than you think
The two biggest adventures near Naples, a volcano summit and a cliff path above the Amalfi Coast, cost less than a museum ticket. Water sports cost more, and a private boat costs a lot, unless you share it. Below, each option is priced from cheapest to dearest, with the catches that can make a cheap day expensive.
Vesuvius crater: EUR10
Entry to the Gran Cono trail is EUR10, or EUR8 for under-25s, with children under 6 free, plus a small online booking fee. That buys a short climb on loose cinder to the crater rim at 1,281 metres, with fumaroles steaming inside the cone. It is the best-value adventure in the region.
The money trap is turning up without a ticket. Sales are online only, through Vesuvius Vivaticket , in timed slots released up to 30 days ahead, with names printed on each ticket, and there is no booth at the top. In October the trail runs 9:00 to 16:00. If the weather service issues an orange alert, the trail shuts and you are refunded. A guided trip with transport costs more, but you can compare Vesuvius hikes on Viator against doing it yourself by train and shuttle.
Path of the Gods: the price of a bus
The Sentiero degli Dei costs nothing to walk. The expense is getting there: SITA buses run along the Amalfi Coast, with a 24-hour COSTIERASITA ticket at about EUR10 and single rides such as Sorrento to Positano at about EUR2.40. A common start is Bomerano, in Agerola, and the path runs high above Positano. The path is exposed, with long drops beside it, so it is not for anyone with vertigo or for a rainy day. Bus details are on SITA Sud .
To reach Sorrento, use the regular Circumvesuviana from Napoli Garibaldi. The Campania Express tourist service is suspended from 1 October 2026 until further notice; check EAV for updates.
Kayaking at Gaiola: mid-range
Guided kayak tours paddle over the Roman remains in the Parco Sommerso di Gaiola, off Posillipo, where villa foundations and mosaic floors lie in shallow water. Prices vary by operator and season, so search Gaiola kayak tours on GetYourGuide and compare what is included. The reserve has its own summer access rules, listed by the Gaiola marine protected area .
Sailing and speedboats: split the cost
A private speedboat along the Gulf or the Amalfi Coast runs from about EUR700 to EUR1,800 or more for a day. For a group of eight, that works out at roughly EUR90 to EUR225 each, which starts to compete with a shared tour. Sailboat charters from Mergellina along the Posillipo coast, past Villa Donn’Anna and sea caves, are the gentler alternative, priced by boat and season.
A free warm-up
The walk down from Posillipo to the fishing hamlet of Marechiaro, past cliffside villas, costs nothing and makes a good test of your legs before the bigger climbs.
Where not to spend
West of the city, the Campi Flegrei have been shaken by earthquakes, including a magnitude 4.7 event on 31 July 2026, and the Solfatara crater has been closed since 2017. Metro Line 2 to Pozzuoli is shut, with replacement buses. Leave this area out of an adventure plan for now.
Money tips
- Check whether a tour price includes the EUR10 crater ticket before comparing it with going alone.
- Pickpockets work the Circumvesuviana and Piazza Garibaldi. Keep your phone zipped away.
- No rental car: camera-enforced traffic zones in the old centre carry fines of roughly EUR80 to EUR335.
