New Orleans Multi-Day Trips: Base and Branch Plan
Anyone planning several days around New Orleans is really planning one base with a few spokes. The city holds enough to fill three days, and the surrounding bayou country offers short trips that need no overnight pack.
The shape of the plan
Packaged multi-day tours of this region are thin on the ground, so treat this as a self-guided template. The shape is simple: sleep in the city and take day trips by car or tour, or add one night in Lafayette. The 3-day itinerary and the 4-day itinerary fill the city days.
Days in the city
Use two or three days for the Quarter, the Garden District and one music night. A Preservation Hall set is 45 minutes, sold online in advance only, from about $25. Frenchmen Street in the Marigny has live sets with some no-cover bars. The St. Charles streetcar is $1.25 a ride, or $3 for a 1-day Jazzy Pass, with 3-day passes at $8 and 7-day passes at $15 on norta.com .
Branch one: the bayou
Barataria Preserve, part of Jean Lafitte National Historical Park, is about 35 minutes south and has boardwalk trails through swamp where alligators and egrets are common. Swamp pontoon tours cost about $29 to $35 when you drive yourself and about $56 to $65 with pickup.
Branch two: the River Road
Whitney Plantation, about an hour west, is a museum of slavery, closed Tuesdays, with advance booking recommended via whitneyplantation.org . Oak Alley is nearby and includes the history of the enslaved people who worked it, with adult tickets about $25.
Branch three: Lafayette
Lafayette sits about 2 hours 15 minutes west on I-10. Vermilionville is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 16:00 with adult tickets about $10. Stay a night if you want to hear Cajun fiddle and eat boudin and cracklins. Cajun cooking is rural and built on pork and dark roux, while New Orleans Creole cooking is urban and leans on butter and tomatoes.
Where to base yourself
Choose the French Quarter for walking access or the Marigny for quieter nights. See hotel options on Booking.com and compare cancellation terms, because hurricane season peaks from mid-August to mid-October.
Dates to plan around
Mardi Gras Day is 9 February 2027, with Carnival opening on 6 January. French Quarter Festival runs 8 to 11 April 2027, and Jazz Fest is at the Fair Grounds Race Course on 22 to 25 April and 29 April to 2 May 2027. Rooms are scarce on all of them, so book early.
Put the Whitney day on a Wednesday to Monday, and leave a spare morning for the airport.
