The obvious day trips from Antwerp fill up: Bruges by midday, the Grand-Place year-round. But the same rail network reaches quieter, cheaper places that most visitors skip, and several of them cost nothing beyond the fare. Here are the offbeat picks worth swapping in when you want a calmer day.
Ghent instead of Bruges
The single best swap. Ghent runs 46 minutes to just over an hour from Antwerp, roughly €9-14 one way, and delivers the same canals, castle, and guildhouses as Bruges with a fraction of the coach crowds. It is a working university city, so the streets keep a local life the postcard towns lose by lunchtime. From Antwerp specifically, it is also the shorter and cheaper of the two.
Mechelen, the overlooked hop
At 17-20 minutes and €6-9 one way, Mechelen is so close that most people ride straight past it to somewhere further. That is the mistake. St Rumbold’s Cathedral and its carillon anchor a compact, walkable old town that costs almost nothing to explore on foot, and you will share it with far fewer tourists than any of the big names.
De Haan on the coast
If you take the coast day, do not stop at Ostend’s promenade and turn back. The Kusttram runs the length of the shore for a flat local fare, and the belle-epoque resort village of De Haan, with its low villas and tram-stop scale, is the quiet reward most beach-day visitors never reach.
Kalmthoutse Heide heathland
For open space rather than old towns, the Kalmthoutse Heide is a broad cross-border heath and dune reserve a short train ride north of Antwerp, free to walk, with heather, sand, and pine instead of cobbles and crowds. It is the antidote to a run of city day trips.
The rule of thumb
Across this whole region, the quieter alternative is usually one stop, or one tram, past the famous one. Ghent past Bruges, Mechelen instead of a bigger name, De Haan past Ostend: each costs less and crowds less.
