Reykjavik Walking Tours: Architecture and Food
Painted corrugated iron is Reykjavik’s signature building material, and a walk through the old town is the quickest way to see why. Three themed routes follow: architecture first, then food, then thermal water.
Architecture: a 3.5 km loop
Plan about two and a half hours. Begin at Austurvöllur square, between the Parliament building and the cathedral. Pass City Hall and Tjörnin pond, then climb Skólavörðustígur, the painted street of independent galleries, to Hallgrímskirkja. Look for 19th-century timber houses clad in bright bárujárn and for the stone buildings by Guðjón Samúelsson, who also designed the church. The loop is free, and the church nave is open outside services.
Food: a 4 km harbour walk
Start at the Sun Voyager sculpture and follow the paved shore west past Harpa to the Old Harbour. Continue into Grandi, where fish-packing sheds hold Omnom chocolate, Valdís ice cream and the Grandi Mathöll food hall. Allow two to three hours with tasting stops. A short detour back near Tryggvagata brings you to Bæjarins Beztu, the hot dog stand open since 1937, where a hot dog costs around ISK 880. Order “eina með öllu” for one with everything.
Visit Reykjavik publishes maps and events for the harbour district.
Thermal water: a 3 km valley walk
The Laugardalur valley lies about 3 km east of the centre. Walk through the free Reykjavik Botanical Garden, then past the old wash-houses (Þvottalaugarnar), where women did laundry in hot springs until the 1930s. Finish with a swim at Laugardalslaug. An adult ticket is ISK 1,500, ages 10 to 17 pay ISK 400, and children aged 0 to 9 are free. Everyone showers naked with soap first. Pool details are on reykjavik.is .
Where to swim afterwards
Swimming after a walk means a city pool. Sundhöllin on Barónsstígur has rooftop tubs and sits close to the old-town loop. The Blue Lagoon is about 50 km away, on the Reykjanes Peninsula, and needs a timed booking, so plan it as a separate half-day.
Guided options
If you want commentary, search walking tours in Reykjavik and compare start points and group sizes. Tour buses pick up at the 14 numbered Tourist Bus Stops rather than hotel doors.
Kit and timing
Wear windproof layers and waterproof shoes in any month. Winter daylight can drop to four or five hours in late December, so start before 10:00. In June, evening walks stay bright past midnight. Cards and phones are accepted nearly everywhere, so carry no cash.
Linking walks together
All three routes fit in a two-day itinerary , and the sightseeing page describes the landmarks along them.
Verdict: if you do just one, walk the architecture loop in mid-morning and finish at the church with a view from the tower.
