Romantic Reykjavik: Midnight Sun or Aurora
In June the sun hardly sets, and in December it barely rises. Which Reykjavik romance suits you depends on that swing, so plan around the season rather than a fixed list.
Summer: the midnight sun
From late May to late July the sky stays bright through the night. Walk the waterfront at 23:00 from the Sun Voyager sculpture towards Harpa, when the light falls gold across the bay. The northern lights are invisible at this time of year, so do not book an aurora tour. Instead try the puffin boats (20 April to 20 August) from the Old Harbour, a quiet hour on the water. Elding lists current sailings.
Winter: aurora and steam
Aurora season runs roughly from September to April. Minibus tours leave Reykjavik after 21:30 and head for clear sky, and Elding runs northern lights boat cruises from 1 September to 15 April. The lights are never guaranteed, so schedule two evenings. Search northern lights excursions and check the cancellation terms.
Warm water, all year
Sky Lagoon (Kópavogur) has a 70 m infinity pool facing the sea. Passes come as Saman (shared changing) and Sér (private changing), and both include the Skjól Ritual. The minimum age is 12. Slots are dynamic, with reported starting prices around ISK 14,000 and ISK 16,000, so book early at skylagoon.com .
The Blue Lagoon lies 50 km away on the Reykjanes Peninsula. Entry is timed and pre-booked, in three tiers: Comfort, Premium and Signature. It is a half-day outing, and prices change with the date. Details at bluelagoon.com . Eruptions can restart at short notice, so check safetravel.is the same morning.
City hot tubs cost ISK 1,500 per adult. Sundhöllin has rooftop tubs overlooking the city, and Vesturbæjarlaug is a small west-end pool. Shower with soap first, as locals do.
Dinner for two
Dill on Laugavegur 28 serves a New Nordic tasting menu and books out well ahead. Matarkjallarinn on Aðalstræti offers a cellar room with live piano. Grillmarkaðurinn grills over open charcoal. Reserve weeks ahead and read current menus on each restaurant’s website.
A day out together
Skip crowded coaches and take the Golden Circle by rental car. Strokkur erupts every 6 to 10 minutes, and Gullfoss is open around the clock with no entry fee. Þingvellir parking is ISK 1,000 per car for the day. Hold the car door with both hands in wind.
Beds and costs
Hotels add a lodging tax of ISK 800 per unit per night, shown at checkout. Prices are in ISK, and cards work almost everywhere. For a longer stay, check the four-day itinerary and the sightseeing page .
Verdict: book winter if you want the aurora and steam, or June if you want long evenings. The lagoon is worth it in either.
