Romantic Weekend in Zermatt: Dawn Views and Dinner
For couples, Zermatt offers quiet streets with no cars, a mountain that glows at first light and some of the highest dinners in the Alps. It is also expensive, so reserve restaurants and the sunrise train in advance. The route in is by rail: drive to Täsch, leave the car at the Matterhorn Terminal and ride the 12-minute shuttle train. Prices are in Swiss francs (CHF).
First light on the Matterhorn
The Kirchbrücke footbridge near the parish church costs nothing and gives a classic view of the Matterhorn catching the first sun. Arrive before dawn with a warm coat. Mornings are the clearest time, as cloud usually gathers later, but no view is guaranteed on any particular day.
For a bigger version, take the Sunday sunrise train to Gornergrat (3,089 m), which runs every Sunday from July to September. The fare is CHF 138, or CHF 174 if you add the breakfast buffet at the summit restaurant. With a Swiss Travel Pass the prices fall to CHF 69 and CHF 105. Seats are limited, so reserve early. Wrap up warmly, since the wind at the top is cold, and take it slowly in the thin air. Details and booking are on the Gornergrat sunrise page .
A lake walk at dawn
Stellisee, at 2,537 m, sits about 20 minutes on foot from the Blauherd lift station, which you reach from the Sunnegga funicular. On a still morning the Matterhorn is mirrored in the water. The lake is glacier-fed and very cold, with no boats, so it is a place to look and photograph rather than swim. The lifts operate in summer only, ending in mid-October and not reopening until the winter season in late November.
Dinner at altitude
Chez Vrony in Findeln (about 2,130 m) is a family-run restaurant in a house from 1900, with a tearoom there since 1922. It cooks with organic produce from animals grazed in the high pastures and has held Gault-Millau points since 2011. Reserve on +41 27 967 25 52. See the Chez Vrony page .
Restaurant Zum See is in the small hamlet of Zum See at 1,766 m, an old chalet that opens in both summer and winter and is known for seafood. The number is +41 27 967 20 45. In the village, Ferdinand by CERVO serves Swiss food and self-service raclette at the table, for dinner only and with seasonal hours. Details are on the Ferdinand listing .
A night near the top
The 3100 Kulmhotel Gornergrat is a mountain hotel at the end of the railway and was trading in 2026. Sleeping at altitude can bring headaches and restless nights, so arrive rested and drink water. See the hotel website . Zermatt Bergbahnen also lists a VIP gondola with leather seats and champagne, so ask for the price when you book. For village hotels, compare rates on Booking.com .
Timing your trip
June to September gives the lakes, the sunrise train and the long days. December to March brings the ski season and snowy streets. Late October and November fall between seasons, with lifts and trains closing for their annual breaks, so check timetables before you book.
