Three Days South: Petra and Wadi Rum
Petra sits 235 km south of Amman, 3 to 3.5 hours each way, which is why every route worth taking south builds in at least one overnight rather than trying to squeeze it into a single day.
The Golden Triangle, 3 to 4 days
Day one covers Amman to Wadi Musa via Mount Nebo and Madaba on the King’s Highway, timed to arrive for Petra by Night, a candlelit walk through the Siq to the Treasury. Day two is a full day inside Petra: the Siq, the Treasury (Al-Khazneh), the Street of Facades, the Royal Tombs, and the 800-step climb to the Monastery (Ad-Deir) for those up for it. Day three shifts to Wadi Rum for a 4x4 jeep safari through red sandstone canyons and dunes, overnighting in a Bedouin camp or a dome tent. Petra’s ticket, tiered by nights stayed
Petra doesn’t have one flat entry price. Anyone spending at least one night somewhere in Jordan pays 50 JOD for a 1-day pass, 55 JOD for 2 days, or 60 JOD for 3 days. Same-day visitors not staying overnight anywhere in the country, cruise passengers mainly, pay a flat 90 JOD instead. The Jordan Pass (70 to 80 JOD) includes Petra entry for overnight visitors and usually beats buying separately once the visa-fee waiver is factored in.
The King’s Highway, 2 days
This older southern route runs the 5,000-year-old trade road through Madaba, the 1,000-meter chasm of Wadi Mujib, the Crusader-era castle at Karak with its vaulted underground passages, and the Dana Biosphere Reserve, arriving in Petra by the second evening. It suits travelers with a rental car and no fixed schedule more than a tour bus.
The Jordan Trail, Dana to Petra
The Jordan Trail runs 675 km across the country; its best-known stretch links Dana Biosphere Reserve to Petra, 72 km over 4 days, descending from juniper highlands through desert wadis into Petra’s back-door entrance. The verdict
Three to four days is the minimum for the Golden Triangle without cutting either Wadi Rum or a full Petra day; two days works only for the King’s Highway alone, without Wadi Rum attached.
