Las Vegas Activities Beyond the Casino Floor
Las Vegas activities sort naturally into height, water and desert. Pick one from each category and a day fills itself without much overlap.
Height: rides above the Strip
The STRAT tower at 2000 S Las Vegas Blvd runs three thrill rides at the top: Big Shot, a pneumatic catapult launching riders 160 feet up to 1,081 feet elevation; X-Scream, a car that teeters 27 feet over the tower’s edge; and SkyJump, a controlled cable descent from the 108th floor, 855 feet down at 40mph, from $130 to $170. Water and family-scale attractions
Shark Reef Aquarium at Mandalay Bay holds more than 2,000 animals across 15 shark species in a 1.3-million-gallon complex, open daily 10am to 8pm, tickets $29 to $36 adult. Adventuredome at Circus Circus is a 5-acre indoor amusement park under a pink glass dome, free to enter, with all-day ride wristbands at $33.95 to $44.95.
Desert, a short drive out
Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area sits 17 miles west, about a 25-minute drive, with a 13-mile Scenic Drive and the Calico Tanks Trail. From October 1 through May 31, 8am to 5pm, driving the Scenic Drive requires a timed-entry reservation booked at recreation.gov ($2 fee, plus $15 per vehicle entrance); it’s not required June through September or outside that window. Free spectacle in between
The Bellagio Fountains run free on the 8.5-acre lake, weekdays 3pm to 7:30pm every 30 minutes and 8pm to midnight every 15 minutes. The Sphere’s exterior Exosphere display runs 24/7, also free, visible from the street and from upper floors of nearby resorts, no ticket required for the outside view.
The verdict
Build a day around one height ride, one indoor family attraction and a Red Rock morning, with the Bellagio Fountains as the free connector between them. Pace it so the desert stop happens before the day heats up, since the drive back into the city offers little shade along the way.
