Penang by Hawker Centre and Jetty
Most of what makes Penang worth an activity list is edible, and the rest is either a wooden pier or a carved clan house; between the three, a day here fills itself.
Gurney Drive, for the seafront version
Gurney Drive Hawker Centre sits right on the water, a high-volume food court that suits the modern seafront hotels nearby better than the older stalls further into town. For a more traditional setting, New Lane (Lorong Baru) runs 16:00 to 23:00, closed Wednesdays, for char kway teow, grilled stingray, popiah, and oyster omelets. Cash or a DuitNow QR code is expected at both; card readers barely exist at the stall level.
Line Clear and Hameediyah
On Campbell Street, Hameediyah has served duck curry, mutton kurma, and murtabak since 1907 and is generally reckoned Malaysia’s oldest nasi kandar restaurant, with the newer Line Clear stall a few doors down running the same lane of curries into the night market crowd. Georgetown street food tastings are bookable on GetYourGuide if a guided version with tasting notes is more your pace than working it out stall by stall.
Tan Jetty and Chew Jetty
Tan Jetty’s timber walkway runs 100 meters straight out over the water, one of the more photogenic stretches in George Town at low tide. Chew Jetty next door is the only one of the Clan Jetties set up for visitors, with shrines, craft stalls, and timber houses along the boardwalk, free and open 09:00 to 21:00. The other jetties are private residential lanes; stick to the public boardwalks.
Khoo Kongsi
Leong San Tong Khoo Kongsi, completed in 1906 on Cannon Square, is the most elaborate of the clan houses, gold-leaf woodwork and granite dragon pillars around an ancestral hall. Open daily 09:00 to 17:00, non-Malaysian adult entry RM 15. Details at khookongsi.com.my .
Getting around

The verdict
