Vancouver Day Trips: Mountains or Island
Every day trip out of Vancouver ends up being either a mountain trip or an island trip, and deciding which one first saves a lot of route planning.
Mountain routes
North Vancouver holds two of the closest options: the Capilano Suspension Bridge Park, which charges roughly $75 to $80 CAD for an adult online ticket, and the free Lynn Canyon Park nearby with a smaller suspension bridge and its own rainforest trails. Grouse Mountain’s gondola runs $89 CAD round trip to a summit with hiking trails, a wildlife refuge, and a lumberjack show; hikers climbing the adjacent Grouse Grind stairway still pay the $20 CAD gondola fee to come back down, since the trail only runs uphill. Further out, the Sea to Sky Gondola near Squamish costs $73.95 CAD booked online, 8 dollars more at the gate, and reaches viewpoints over Howe Sound in about an hour’s drive from downtown.
Island route
BC Ferries sails from Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay in roughly 95 minutes, with foot fares near $19 to $22 CAD and vehicle fares closer to $60 to $80 CAD. Once across, Victoria’s Inner Harbour, the Parliament Buildings, and Butchart Gardens are the standard stops, though the door-to-door trip from downtown Vancouver runs closer to three and a half hours each way once ferry lines and terminal transfers are counted. Harbour Air floatplanes cut that to about 35 minutes, with fares from roughly $99 CAD one way downtown to downtown when booked well ahead, or $79 CAD airport to airport.
Either way
TransLink’s $2.85 CAD Compass fare covers getting to the ferry terminal or the North Shore trailheads from downtown, and a $12.55 CAD DayPass is worth it once you’re making several trips before heading out of town. Weekend traffic on both the Sea to Sky Highway and the road to the Tsawwassen terminal builds fast in summer, so leaving before mid-morning saves more time than any shortcut once you’re already on the road. That same early start also buys first pick of parking at the North Shore trailheads, which fill up well before noon on a clear weekend.
A Victoria and Butchart Gardens day tour on Viator handles the ferry logistics for the island route, and a rental through DiscoverCars makes more sense for the mountain route, where the Sea to Sky Highway rewards having your own car. See the multi-day version of either route if a single day starts to feel too short.
