Visiting Dili with Children
Dili suits families who like to be outdoors and are comfortable with a little improvising. It has few attractions made for children, and its mainland beaches carry a crocodile warning, so the usual seaside afternoon is off the list. What remains is good: a famous staircase, a colourful market, a hill village with a view and, for older swimmers, reefs on Atauro Island.
Toddlers and pre-schoolers
The best outing is the hill village of Dare, roughly 10 to 15 km inland. Entry is free, there is a small museum and a cafe, and the view over the bay holds adult attention as well. The cafe may open only at weekends, so check before you go. The Tais Market in Colmera is a quick, colourful stop, so keep small children close. Skip the Cristo Rei climb: the concrete staircase has about 570 steps and is steep.
School-age children
Older children can try Cristo Rei, the 27 m copper statue on Cape Fatucama, about 7 km from the centre. The staircase is long and has Stations of the Cross as natural rest stops. Go early with plenty of water, cover shoulders and knees because it is a pilgrimage site and expect a slow pace. Back at the market, children can practise bargaining on small items that cost about US$1 to 5.
Atauro Island is the best family day for confident swimmers, and the official tourism site names it as the exception to its crocodile warning for the coast. Reefs lie close to shore at Beloi. Dive operators and the community group ATKOMA offer snorkel trips, so ask about minimum age and life jackets. The Berlin Nakroma ferry takes about 2 hours 15 minutes each way and costs US$4. Sailings run on Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. Crossings from December to April are rougher and sometimes cancelled, so allow for that with young children. Visit the official ferry page for details, or look through family snorkelling options to compare.
Teenagers
Teenagers can manage the full day on Atauro and may enjoy a dive course with an operator in Dili. The listed operators are Dive Timor Lorosae, Aquatica Dive Resort, Timor Sunshine Divers and Dreamers Dive Academy. Age rules vary, so ask each operator directly. The occupation museums in the city cover violence and loss, and they suit older teenagers at most, so most families leave them out.
Crocodiles and the water
The UK government warns that crocodiles are occasionally seen near Dili beaches. Do not wade or paddle at any mainland beach, including Areia Branca, Cristo Rei Beach and Dolok Oan, and keep children away from river mouths and from murky water or dusk. Ask your hotel or a dive operator before anyone enters the sea. The UK safety page has the full advice, including rainy-season flooding from November to April.
Practicalities
Carry small US dollar notes, as cards are limited. Bring sun protection, snacks and water for every outing, because the sights are spread out.
