Museum Visits, Whale Trips and Dive Tours in Dili
Organised attractions in Dili come down to four things: guides at two museums, whale and dolphin boats, dive-operator trips across to Atauro Island and the public ferry. The list is short, and nothing here resembles a big-city tour programme. Contact each provider directly, in person or by phone.
Museum guides
At the Chega! Exhibition, in the former Comarca Balide prison, guided tours can be arranged at the centre. The listed phone number is +670 331 0465. Opening days are Monday to Friday, with the reported hours about 09:00 to 12:00 and 14:00 to 17:00, and no entrance charge. The prison dates from 1963, held political prisoners under the Indonesian occupation and later housed the CAVR truth commission, which worked there from 2001 to 2005. Visitors see exhibition panels on the occupation and the commission’s findings. Call ahead to confirm the hours.
At the Timorese Resistance Archive and Museum on Rua Formosa, guided tours are also offered. It opens Tuesday to Saturday and is closed Sunday and Monday. Reports put the entry fee at a few dollars. Both institutions are Timorese-run. Treat the visit as a visit to a memorial, not a day out, and dress modestly.
Whale and dolphin boats
Peak whale watching on the official tourism site is August to November for blue and sperm whales. Another report gives September to December for pygmy blue whales. Spinner dolphins turn up daily on the north coast. The operators named are Compass Diving, Dive Timor Lorosae and Moby Wildlife Tours, all in Dili. Choose one that follows the national whale-watching guidelines, and ask about the price when you enquire.
Dive trips and the ferry to Atauro
Dive operators in Dili include Dive Timor Lorosae, Aquatica Dive Resort, Timor Sunshine Divers and Dreamers Dive Academy. On Atauro, you will find Atauro Dive Resort, Beloi Beach Hotel Dive Resort, Compass Diving, Beni-Marine, Mysaffy and the community snorkel group ATKOMA. Ask whether a trip includes the crossing. Travelling independently, the Berlin Nakroma ferry costs US$4 each way and the Success costs US$5, with tickets sold in cash on the day at the port. The official ferry page gives sailing days and times. If you want to compare packages, look at organised Dili boat and dive tours .
Booking and events
Book the museum guides directly with the museums. If an event is the reason for your trip, the official calendar lists the Timor-Leste Coffee Festival in November 2026, date to be confirmed. Pay in US dollars with small notes, because cards are not widely used. Read the UK travel advice on protests and crowds.
