Gyumri for Couples: Stays and Sunsets
A weekend for two in Gyumri revolves around three things: a room in an old tuff house or an art hotel, unhurried evenings on cobbled streets and a sunset from the hill above the city. There are no spas or wineries here, so the appeal is atmosphere and a slower pace. Pack warm clothes, because at about 1,550 m the evenings cool quickly and winter is cold and snowy.
A weekend sketch
Friday evening. Check in, then walk Abovyan Street from Vardanants Square. The 19th-century mansions and carved wooden gates look their best after dark.
Saturday. Spend the morning in the Aslamazyan Sisters Gallery and the Dzitoghtsyan Museum, lunch in town, then take a taxi to the western ridge for sunset. Have dinner at Cherkezi Dzor.
Sunday. Take a taxi to Marmashen Monastery, about 10 km north-west, where apricot-coloured stone stands among apple orchards, before the train to Yerevan.
Stays
Berlin Art Hotel at 25 Haghtanak Ave has rooms designed around local artists’ work and a garden terrace within walking distance of the museums. Compare dates and prices on Booking.com . Between November and March, ask about heating before you book.
The sunset spot
The ridge west of the centre, about 2.5 km from Vardanants Square, holds the Black Fortress of 1834 to 1847 and the Mother Armenia statue of 1975 (details ). The statue holds ears of wheat rather than a sword. From the open ground you look across the Shirak plain to Mount Aragats, and the light turns the tuff roofs gold. A Russian base sits beside the fortress, and photographing military sites is not permitted, so aim your camera at the view instead.
Dinner at Cherkezi Dzor
Cherkezi Dzor is a fish restaurant a few minutes’ drive from the old town, known for trout and sturgeon. Hours and the address should be confirmed with your hotel, which can also book the table.
A morning for two at the galleries
The Aslamazyan Sisters Gallery at 242 Abovyan St is in an 1880 black tuff mansion with a carved wooden balcony; it is open Tuesday to Sunday, from 10:30 to 17:00, and foreign visitors pay 1,000 AMD. Hours are on mus.am . Buy a hand-hammered mushurba, the cup that gurgles as you drink, as a keepsake of the trip.
Keeping expectations right
Armenia’s wine region is Vayots Dzor, around Areni, far to the south, so wine tasting is not part of a Gyumri stay. Two nights is enough, and a third works if you add Harichavank.
