Gyumri Day Trip Ideas and Journey Times

If you have two to three hours
Marmashen Monastery is the nearest and the most rewarding. It is about 10 km north-west of the city, close to Vahramaberd village, and use a taxi and agree the price and waiting time first. Founded by Prince Vahram Pahlavuni in 988 and completed in 1029, its Katoghike church is built of reddish-apricot tuff with blind arcades and khachkars. Admission is free.
If you have half a day
Harichavank is a large monastery complex about 35 km south-east, near Artik, with a church of the 7th century and a cathedral of 1201. A direct bus from Gyumri takes around 50 minutes. Dress modestly, because it is an active monastery.
Yererouk basilica is a 5th-century church of pale orange tuff near Anipemza, about 45 km south-west. It stands next to the closed Turkey border fence, so a passport must be in your bag. Admission is free.
Ani viewpoint at Haykadzor gives a free but distant look at the ruined medieval capital of Ani, which lies in Turkey across the Akhuryan gorge. The nearer post at Kharkov is inside the border zone and needs advance permission; the operator Hamshen Tour registers visitors about 35 days ahead, as described at hamshen.am . Never go down into the gorge or approach the fence, and ask the guards before taking any photographs.
If you have a full day
Lake Arpi National Park is about 50 km north at around 2,020 m. Its two islands hold a large colony of Armenian gulls, some 5,000 to 8,000 pairs, and Dalmatian pelicans breed there; the Ramsar entry is at rsis.ramsar.org . Bird observation points work from May to August. Allow about an hour and a quarter each way and bring warm clothes.
A solemn excursion
Spitak, about 40 km east, lay at the centre of the 1988 earthquake. A memorial church overlooks the town from the cemetery hill. Visitors come to pay respects, so keep voices low and dress with care.
Too far for one day
Tatev, Lake Sevan, Akhtala and Odzun each take more than about three hours in each direction. Treat them as trips from Yerevan.
Getting home
Trains from Gyumri to Yerevan leave at 07:45, 11:55 and 18:15, and a Friday to Sunday express leaves at 17:55 from 25 September 2026. Times change, so check railway.am .
