Walking Gyumri: Kumayri Streets and Fortress Ridge
Two walks cover Gyumri well, and both can be done without a guide: a loop through the historic streets and a climb to the western ridge. The old town is flat and its main streets run close together, so a short loop fits into an hour and a long one into a morning. You need no tickets or permits for the streets themselves.
One hour: Vardanants Square and Abovyan Street Begin at Vardanants Square, where two black tuff churches face each other and a bronze equestrian monument to Vardan Mamikonian stands in the middle.

Gyumri Landmarks and House-Museums
Gyumri rewards slow looking. Its landmarks fall into four groups: the black and orange tuff streets of the Kumayri district, two churches that carry the memory of the 1988 earthquake, a fortress and statue on a western ridge, and a row of house-museums. The district has been on Armenia’s UNESCO Tentative List since 1995 but is not a World Heritage Site. Everything except the ridge sits within about 1.5 km of Vardanants Square.

Gyumri for Couples: Stays and Sunsets
A weekend for two in Gyumri revolves around three things: a room in an old tuff house or an art hotel, unhurried evenings on cobbled streets and a sunset from the hill above the city. There are no spas or wineries here, so the appeal is atmosphere and a slower pace. Pack warm clothes, because at about 1,550 m the evenings cool quickly and winter is cold and snowy.
A weekend sketch Friday evening.

A Gyumri Base for Longer Armenia Trips
Gyumri is a practical base for northern Armenia: the city itself needs about a day and a half, and from here you can reach monasteries on the Shirak plateau, the Lori canyons and the Georgian border. This page sets out how many nights to give it and where each route leads. Multi-day content is thin because Gyumri’s own attractions are compact, so most of the extra time goes on trips out of town.

Family Outings in Gyumri
Families visiting Gyumri get the most from a slow, indoor-leaning day: a morning at a museum, a puppet show, a break outside and an early dinner. The city has few rides or attractions built for children, and there is no zoo to visit, so the plan below leans on a theatre, a model of the old town and clay painting. Costs are in Armenian dram (AMD) and may change.
A day that works with children Morning: the Dzitoghtsyan Museum, which opens about 11:00.
