A Gyumri Base for Longer Armenia Trips
Gyumri is a practical base for northern Armenia: the city itself needs about a day and a half, and from here you can reach monasteries on the Shirak plateau, the Lori canyons and the Georgian border. This page sets out how many nights to give it and where each route leads. Multi-day content is thin because Gyumri’s own attractions are compact, so most of the extra time goes on trips out of town.
One night: the city only
Arrive by train from Yerevan’s Sasuntsi David station. The ordinary services leave at 07:55, 14:25 and 18:25 and take just over three hours, and on Friday, Saturday and Sunday an express leaves at 09:15 and takes 2 h 10. Spend the day in the old town and the museums, climb to the Black Fortress ridge at the end of the afternoon and leave next morning. Timetables change, so check railway.am .
Two nights: add the nearby monasteries
A second day adds Marmashen Monastery, about 10 km north-west of the city, and Harichavank, which lies about 4 km from the town of Artik and can be reached by direct bus in roughly 50 minutes. If you have a car and an early start, Yererouk basilica near Anipemza is possible too, but take your passport, because it stands beside the closed Turkey border.
Three nights: continue to Lori
Drive or take public transport east across the Pambak pass, through Spitak, to Vanadzor. The earthquake of 1988 centred on this area, and the memorial church at Spitak is a place to stop quietly. From Vanadzor the Debed gorge leads to Sanahin and Haghpat, two monasteries inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. From there you can return to Yerevan or go on north.
Crossing to Georgia
The Bavra to Ninotsminda crossing is about 50 km north of Gyumri and about an hour by road. It opens the way to the Javakheti plateau, Akhaltsikhe and Vardzia, which is about 2.5 hours from Gyumri. Shared vans and taxis run to Ninotsminda and Akhalkalaki. Ask your hotel about current crossing rules and Vardzia visiting times before you commit to a date.
Where to sleep
Berlin Art Hotel, at 25 Haghtanak Ave, is a boutique hotel with rooms that show local artists’ work and is close to the museums. Search for current rooms and prices on Booking.com .
Routes that need a different base
Tatev, Lake Sevan, Akhtala and Odzun are each more than three hours’ travel each way from Gyumri. Plan them from Yerevan. Before you go, read the Armenia advice on gov.uk and travel.state.gov.
Cold and altitude
At about 1,550 m, Gyumri has cold, snowy winters and hot, dry summers. Pack for a wide range, and give extra time in winter when roads and stone steps are icy.
