Family Days in Gjirokaster
Gjirokaster offers a short list of family activities, and it is better to know that before you plan. This is a town for walking and looking rather than for play areas. Children will find a hill town of stone lanes, a castle with long views, horses and a spring with startling blue water. The notes below cover the ones that work and the limits that matter for safety. Costs are in Albanian lek (ALL) and are paid in cash.
Before you go
The old town is built on slopes of polished limestone cobbles. After rain they are slippery for small feet and for strollers, which are hard to push on the steeper lanes. A baby carrier is easier. Plan short walking stages and bring water. Children in sandals will struggle, so sturdy shoes are best.
Castle ramparts
A family visit to the castle costs about 400 ALL per ticket at the gate, and the armaments museum can add about 200 ALL. Count on up to 2 hours. The walls have low edges and steep drops, so older children should stay beside an adult and younger ones should be held. The castle does not suit strollers, and some interior sections are not appropriate for young children. In winter the opening hours are shorter, and Monday closure is possible.
Horse riding
Caravan Horse Riding Albania stables are above Asim Zeneli, about a 15-minute drive. The 2.5-hour lakeside ride is listed at about EUR 50 per person. Riders need some confidence, and the weight limit on some rides is about 90 kg, which can rule out heavier adults. Ask about shorter rides for beginners and what age the stables accept.
The Blue Eye
The spring is about 35 km away, roughly 35 to 60 minutes by car. The gate fee is about 50 ALL, with 100 to 300 ALL for parking. The walk from the car park is about 2 km, which is a long way for small children, so the electric scooter or small train at the entrance helps. The deep, cold water, at 10 to 13 degrees C, has a strong current at the source. Signs forbid swimming, and the rule applies to every child and adult. Keep to the boardwalk.
A lakeside stroll
Viroi Lake spring park, about 3 km north of town, has a promenade. Ask locally what is open before you drive out, and keep children away from the water.
Time in the kitchen
The “Cook Like a Local” class by Kalemi Travel and Tours in the Old Bazaar lasts about 2 hours and covers qifqi, a Gjirokaster dish of rice, herb and egg balls. Before you book, ask whether children may join and how the hot oil is handled.
Road safety
Child seats matter on mountain roads, because road deaths in Albania are among the highest in Europe. The UK travel advice gives the current picture.
