Walking Gyumri: Kumayri Streets and Fortress Ridge
Two walks cover Gyumri well, and both can be done without a guide: a loop through the historic streets and a climb to the western ridge. The old town is flat and its main streets run close together, so a short loop fits into an hour and a long one into a morning. You need no tickets or permits for the streets themselves.
One hour: Vardanants Square and Abovyan Street
Begin at Vardanants Square, where two black tuff churches face each other and a bronze equestrian monument to Vardan Mamikonian stands in the middle. Quietly note the earthquake memorial behind Holy Saviour Church, which commemorates the people killed in 1988. Then walk north along cobbled Abovyan Street. The street is lined with 19th-century mansions, wrought-iron lamps and carved wooden doors, and the Aslamazyan Sisters Gallery is at No. 242.
Half a day: the full Kumayri loop (about 2.5 km)
Continue the one-hour walk and turn west onto Rustaveli Street, whose paving of red and black tuff has been restored; the Mher Mkrtchyan Museum is at No. 30. Move south to Varpetats Street, the street of writers, to pass the Isahakyan house at No. 91 and the Shiraz house at No. 101. Finish by coming back along Gorki Street to Central Park, past courtyards with arched masonry and stone bas-reliefs. Opening days for each museum are listed on mus.am ; the Mkrtchyan museum closes on Sundays.
Two hours: Black Fortress and Mother Armenia
The ridge route starts about 2.5 km west of the square and is best at the end of the afternoon. At the top you walk around the outer wall of the Black Fortress, built from 1834 to 1847, and follow a footpath to the statue of Mother Armenia from 1975. The view takes in the rooftops of the city and Mount Aragats on the eastern horizon. A taxi to the top saves your legs for the walk down.
The Russian 102nd base lies beside the fortress. Photographing military facilities, vehicles and fences is not allowed, so frame your pictures towards the city.
What the ground is like
- Stone flagstones and cobbles are uneven. Choose shoes with a firm sole.
- From December to February, black ice forms fast on steps and slopes, so traction soles are worth carrying.
- Stray dogs gather on the outskirts. After dark, stay on lit central streets.
- At 1,550 m the summer sun is strong. Carry water.
Joining a guide
Most guided walks are the museum excursions at the house-museums, with prices on mus.am, and your hotel can look for a local guide for the old town. Agree the length, route and fee before you start.
