Sightseeing Around Göreme and Uçhisar
Sights around Göreme are best planned by distance. The nearest are walkable, and the rest are short drives.
Within walking distance
The Göreme Open-Air Museum is about 1.5 km from the village. Its rock-cut churches include Tokalı, Elmalı, Yılanlı, Karanlık, Çarıklı and St Barbara. Tokalı is just outside the museum gate. Official hours are 08:00 to 17:45 daily, with last tickets at 17:15, and a night session runs 18:00 to 23:00 (see the ministry page ). Guides quote about EUR 20 for entry, but confirm at the gate.
The Dark Church is ticketed separately, at about EUR 6 according to guides. Whether any pass covers it is reported differently, so ask. A single small window protects the frescoes.
Love Valley viewpoints cost nothing to visit.
A short drive
Uçhisar Castle is about 5 km from Göreme toward Nevşehir. It is a rock outcrop honeycombed with rooms. Entry is separate, at about 400 TL per guides, and the Museum Pass is reported not to cover it.
Paşabağ, also called Monks Valley, has double and triple-headed fairy chimneys.
Further out
Zelve Open-Air Museum, an abandoned cave village, is in the Avanos area. It has its own ticket, at about EUR 12 to 15. Reported winter hours are 08:00 to 17:00 from 31 October to 31 March and 08:00 to 19:00 in summer.
Devrent Valley, near Ürgüp, has animal-shaped fairy chimneys.
A suggested order
Spend a morning at the Open-Air Museum and the Dark Church, since they share a site and a day. Take an afternoon for Uçhisar Castle and Paşabağ, which are on the same side of town. Keep Zelve and Devrent for a separate outing, ideally combined with Avanos, because they sit further away and need their own tickets or a driver.
A note on tickets
Prices are in lira, but guides usually quote euros. The ministry card for citizens is not the same as a foreign visitor pass, so check what your pass covers rather than assume. Entry prices change, so treat every figure here as a guide and confirm it on the day. Winter and summer hours differ at some sites, so check the season you are visiting in.
Looking after the sites
Do not use flash in the churches, do not touch the frescoes, and do not climb on fairy chimneys. Tuff is soft and breaks, and the drops can be steep.
