Houmt Souk Day Trip Ideas by Distance
Which excursion fits your day depends on how far you want to go. Houmt Souk is on the north coast of Djerba, an island in southern Tunisia linked to the mainland by a causeway and a ferry. Everything below starts from the town, with approximate distances by road.
Short on time: under 30 minutes away
Erriadh (about 8 km). The whitewashed village of Erriadh is the home of Djerbahood, a street-art project of roughly 250 murals by over 150 artists, free to walk through all year. Some of the older works have faded. The village also holds the El Ghriba synagogue, still an active centre of worship and pilgrimage. Security is heavy, with checkpoints and ID checks at the approach. Wear modest clothes, carry a head covering of your own and ask locally about access.
Midoun (about 15 km). A market town with routes down to the east-coast beaches. Beaches here are not all equipped the same way, so look for flags and ask a local before swimming, and keep a close eye on children.
Half a day: pottery and boats
Guellala (about 20 km). The island’s pottery village has workshops along the main street and a museum of life-sized scenes from traditional customs. The clay comes from quarries under the village. A taxi or a bicycle is the way to get there.
Ras Rmel and the flamingo flats. Boats leave from the Houmt Souk port. The sail is 30 to 60 minutes each way and the whole outing about six hours, lunch generally included. From October to May flamingos feed on the flats, though sightings are never promised. Do not rely on calm water or on lifeguards.
A full day on the mainland
Zarzis (about 50 km). Cross by the El Kantara causeway or take the Ajim-Jorf ferry. If the weather turns, ferry queues grow, so leave plenty of margin for the return.
Tataouine circuit (130 to 145 km one way). The fortified granaries of ksour such as Ksar Hadada, and the hilltop settlements of Chenini and Douiret, make a very long day. Go with a licensed operator, leave early and stay well away from Ben Guerdane, Remada and Dehiba near the Libyan frontier.
Not realistic as day trips
El Djem is around 300 km from Djerba. Sousse, Monastir, Hammamet and Cap Bon are farther still. Give these a separate trip on the mainland.
Useful details
- Metered yellow taxis cover the island. Confirm the meter is on.
- Louages run from the station in Houmt Souk to Zarzis, Medenine, Gabes and Tataouine.
- Pay in Tunisian dinars (TND), since small cafes and souks mostly want cash.
- Summer heat is severe, so bring water and set off early.
Organised excursions can be searched on GetYourGuide . The FCDO Tunisia page shows which border areas to avoid, and the Djerbahood website has background on the murals.
