Island Heritage Loop by Taxi from Houmt Souk
Visitors often ask for a standard “attraction tour” of Houmt Souk, and the honest answer is that the market is small. No fixed-route sightseeing programme with published prices operates here. The sights are close together or reachable by taxi, and a few providers sell guided versions. The table below sums up what is on offer.
| Option | Starts from | Rough time | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Old-quarter walk with a guide | Souk Errbaa | 2 to 3 hours | Souks, funduqs, port |
| Taxi heritage loop | Your hotel or the port | Half a day | Erriadh, Guellala, Midoun |
| Ras Rmel boat trip | Fishing port or marina | About 6 hours | Flamingos October to May |
| Djerba Explore museum visit | Midoun road, 20 km east | 2 to 3 hours | Lalla Hadria museum, heritage village |
Taxi heritage loop
Because Houmt Souk is the island’s main town, taxis wait around the centre and the port. A driver can take you out to Erriadh, about 8 km away, then on to Guellala, about 20 km away, before returning through Midoun, about 15 km from town. Fares are metered, so agree whether waiting time at each stop is included. A morning start keeps you ahead of the heat.
- Erriadh: Djerbahood, the village street-art project.
- Guellala: pottery workshops and a museum with life-sized scenes from island customs.
- Midoun: its market and the beaches along the east coast.
Anyone who wants to visit the El Ghriba synagogue in Erriadh should treat it as a place of worship rather than a photo stop. Security is heavy, so allow time for checks, dress modestly and bring your own head covering. Visiting arrangements change, so ask locally.
Guided walk in the old quarter
The centre is a souk quarter around the port, with no medina walls. A guide can explain the funduqs, which are courtyard inns built for traders and now partly converted into hotels and workshops, and can point out the jewellers’ lanes. Settle on duration and price in advance.
Ras Rmel by boat
Boats depart from the fishing port or marina, sail for 30 to 60 minutes and return after a day that lasts about six hours. Lunch is normally included. Flamingos are a seasonal sight, from October to May, with no guarantee on the day. Prices differ a lot between sellers, so compare before you commit. Children should stay close, as water conditions are not something to rely on.
Djerba Explore
The Lalla Hadria museum holds more than 1,000 pieces of Islamic art, textiles, carpets, manuscripts, ceramics and jewellery spanning the 7th to the 20th century. The park ticket, about 32.5 to 37 TND for adults and 24 TND for children, also lets you into an animal area that is better left out of your visit.
Before you book
- Ask what the price covers, including entry fees and meals.
- Pay in Tunisian dinars (TND) where possible.
- Carry water, as shade is limited and the summer sun is intense.
Sellers of boat days and guided visits can be compared on Viator . The FCDO advice for Tunisia lists current regional warnings, and the heritage authority page for the museum gives hours.
