Douz Day Trips by Car: Ksar Ghilane and Kebili
Before you book, read the latest US State Department and UK FCDO travel advice for Tunisia. Parts of the far south are military or border zones that tourists cannot enter, and desert trips should go through a licensed local operator.
Four places make sense as outings from Douz, and they differ a lot in effort. This page ranks them by distance, from a short hop to a whole day on the road. October to April is the comfortable season, and a start before 8 am helps in any month.
Kebili, 28 km
The quickest option. Kebili is the next town up the road, a regional centre with another palm oasis. Shared taxis called louages run from Douz, fill up before leaving and are paid in cash. The Douz station is well organised, and a ride to Gabes was 13.4 TND in December 2024.
Chott el Djerid and the road to Tozeur
North and west of Douz lies a vast salt pan. The tarmac to Tozeur runs along a raised causeway, about 64 to 80 km long depending on the source, and the drive from Douz takes around 2 hours. No water sits on top, so boat rides and lake cruises do not exist, and swimming is out of the question. Mud around the edges is treacherous. Keep to the road, never steer onto the crust and expect gusts that lift sand across the lanes. Stalls beside the road sell salt crystals.
Matmata, about 1.5 hours
The village of Matmata is known for houses dug downward into the soft rock around open courtyards. It is a long day trip, so leave early. A small fee is usual at the courtyard houses you enter. Many visitors go by 4x4 with a driver, and the Wikivoyage figure for that is about 350 to 400 TND per vehicle.
Ksar Ghilane, a full day
Count on 130 to 145 km each way, roughly 2 hours of driving. At the oasis you can soak in a warm spring of about 29 C, according to operator listings, and look at the remains of a Roman fort, Tisavar, which stands less than 1 km from the palms and was built under Commodus (180 to 192 AD). The road situation is mixed: Wikipedia says an asphalt road links the oasis to Douz and Matmata, while off-road sources describe a track. For that reason it is best done with an operator and not as a self-drive. Read the Ksar Ghilane entry on Wikipedia for more on the camps and the fort.
Places too far for a day
Tozeur airport is about 2 hours away. Djerba is 240 km off and Tunis is 6.5 to 7.5 hours by car. Douz is inland, so there are no beaches to visit at any distance short of a long drive.
Keep clear of the closed zones
The UK Foreign Office does not name Douz, Kebili, Tozeur or Ksar Ghilane in its warnings. It does advise against all travel in the militarised zone south of El Borma and Dhehiba, and within 20 km of the Libyan border beyond Dhehiba. Pull up the FCDO warnings page and its map before any trip south or east of Jebil National Park. Nothing in that direction is offered as an outing for visitors.
