Where you can walk
Sankapala rock shelters. Sankapala Raja Maha Viharaya at Pallebedda sits just off the Ratnapura to Hambantota road. Wander between rock shelters with Brahmi inscriptions below the drip-ledges, see the reclining Buddha in the Cave IV image house and find the ruined dagoba and the tomb linked to Pussadeva. A monk or caretaker may guide you. It is a short drive north-west from Udawalawe, and sources differ on the distance, so ask your driver. It is a working place of worship: dress modestly and remove your shoes. Ask about any fee on arrival.
Maduwanwela Walawwa. A manor house at Kolonna, about an hour or less from Udawalawe by car. Walk through the museum rooms alone or with a caretaker. The house dates from the 18th century and was last extended in 1905. It became a Department of Archaeology museum after the state took it over in 1974. Of its original 121 rooms, about 43 remain. Check the fee and hours before you go.
Lodge grounds. A few lodges have grounds worth a morning stroll, and some can arrange birdwatching on foot. Only count on it if the lodge confirms it. Kalu’s Hideaway has about five acres to wander.

Gear and timing

- Insect repellent
- An early start, since the dry zone heats up fast
