Travel advisory: As of August 2026, Qatar is affected by the wider regional conflict with Iran. Earlier in the year the country took direct fire, with missiles and drones hitting sites in Qatar, including near Doha’s main airport, and Al Udeid Air Base outside the city was struck; one civilian was killed over the campaign. A ceasefire has been on and off since, Qatar’s tourism sector is open and recovering, and flights are operating through controlled corridors, but international aviation bodies still restricted Gulf overflight into late August and the situation stays fluid. The US State Department has Qatar at Level 3, “Reconsider Travel.” Check the current US State Department and UK FCDO advisories before booking, and again before you fly, and expect possible flight disruption. Everything below is written for a normal visit, for when it’s calm.

The 7-day version: everything, plus a slower finish
Seven days builds on the 5-day plan with a third day-trip day, Purple Island’s mangroves and the Sheikh Faisal Museum, plus Aspire Park, and closes with a slower, cheaper final day back in the city.

Day 1: The Corniche, MIA, and Souq Waqif
Walk the free Corniche, visit the Museum of Islamic Art (MIA) (around QR 100, about $27, closed Wed), then unwind for free in MIA Park. In the evening, wander Souq Waqif, free to walk, with the Falcon Souq, Gold Souq, and the city’s best concentration of Qatari dining.
Day 2: The National Museum, Msheireb, and Katara
Spend the morning at the National Museum of Qatar (around QR 50, about $14, closed Tue). Walk to the free Msheireb Museums, including Bin Jelmood House, a sober museum of the Indian Ocean slave trade. In the afternoon, visit Katara Cultural Village, free to enter, with its amphitheatre, mosques, and a public beach.
Day 3: The Pearl, Lusail, and the National Library
Walk The Pearl-Qatar’s free Porto Arabia marina promenade and Qanat Quartier’s canals. In the afternoon, head to Lusail: the free Lusail Boulevard, the fountain at Place Vendome Mall, and Lusail Stadium, the 2022 World Cup final venue, still standing. Finish at the free Qatar National Library and Oxygen Park in Education City.
Day 4: The Inland Sea
Book a tour or a 4x4 for Khor Al Adaid, the Inland Sea, roughly 45 minutes to an hour south, where the dunes meet open water; it’s on the UNESCO tentative list, not a full World Heritage Site. Full-day tours run 4-6 hours; rates vary by operator, so compare a couple before you book.
Day 5: Al Zubarah and Zekreet
An ordinary rental car works today. Drive about 1.5 hours north to Al Zubarah Fort, Qatar’s only full UNESCO World Heritage Site, a ruined 18th-19th century pearling town with a 1938 fort still standing on it. From there, head roughly an hour west to the Zekreet Peninsula for the abandoned Film City set and Richard Serra’s kilometer-long steel sculpture in the open desert.
Day 6: Purple Island, Sheikh Faisal, and Aspire Park
Drive roughly 45 minutes to an hour north to Purple Island, a mangrove area good for kayaking, reachable in an ordinary car; verify current kayak rental costs on-site. On the way back, stop at the Sheikh Faisal Museum, about 40 minutes west of the city, an eclectic private collection covering everything from vintage cars to Islamic art (entry fee, verify). Back in Doha, close the day for free at Aspire Park, with The Torch tower overhead.
Day 7: A slower final day
Keep the last day cheap and unhurried: a final free wander through Souq Waqif for any last souvenirs or dates, one more free evening on the Corniche, or a return trip to MIA Park if you didn’t get enough of it on day one. Depart from Hamad International Airport (DOH), ranked among the world’s best.
How much does 7 days in Doha cost?
Figure roughly QR 0-210 (about $0-58) for entry fees across the museum and city days, plus your desert safari and rental car costs for the day-trip days. Add Doha Metro fares (from QR 2, about $0.55 each) and a budget room in Souq Waqif or Msheireb to keep the total down over a full week.
Book the desert safari and rental car ahead of a weekend, and recheck the current US State Department or UK FCDO advisory closer to your travel date.
