Guangzhou in 3 Days on a Budget (With Daily Costs)

Day 1: Yuexiu arrival and orientation

Land at Baiyun Airport (CAN) and set up your Alipay or WeChat Pay transport QR code before you leave the terminal; Terminal 1 closed for good on 7 May 2026, so arrivals now route through T2 or the new T3, and the airport express (Metro Line 3) into Tianhe runs about 50-60 minutes for ¥7-14. Drop your bags in Yuexiu or near Beijing Road, then spend the afternoon on foot: Sacred Heart Cathedral is free and open until 5:30pm, Beijing Road pedestrian street is free and dense with dim sum, and Yuexiu Park (free, 6am-10pm) with its Five Rams Statue makes an easy loop before dinner. Eat congee or cheung fun off Beijing Road for under ¥30 a dish.

Day 2: Old Guangzhou and the river

Morning at the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall (¥10), one of the cheapest major sights in the country, for the carved wood and stone courtyards alone. Walk or take a short metro hop to Shamian Island (free) for an hour or two among the old European concession buildings, then double back through Liwan’s antique streets. In the evening, board a basic Pearl River night cruise (¥70-100; skip the ¥180-280 dinner tier unless you want the buffet) from Tianzi Wharf or the Canton Tower’s Fortune Wharf for the skyline lit up after dark.

Day 3: Canton Tower and Tianhe

Ascend the Canton Tower (base ticket around ¥150, combo tiers to ¥228; check current tiers on the tower’s own site ) in the morning before the queues build, and book online rather than walking up. Spend the afternoon in Tianhe’s Zhujiang New Town, where the Zaha Hadid-designed Opera House and the skyline are free to walk. For dinner, a mid-range dim sum chain like Dian Dou De runs ¥50-70 a person, roughly a third of what the historic, upscale Tao Tao Ju charges for the same style of meal.

How do you pay for the metro and street food here?

Alipay or WeChat Pay QR codes cover nearly everything, tapped straight from your phone at metro gates and most restaurant counters. Both apps let foreign visitors link a Visa, Mastercard or Amex directly since 2023-24, using a passport and an international phone number. Carry some cash as backup, since a handful of small vendors still hesitate over QR payment; Guangzhou’s official visitor portal has current entry rules if you’re still finalizing your visa.

Keep one afternoon loose rather than over-scheduling it; Beijing Road rewards a second, slower pass more than a fourth ticketed sight would.
