Guangzhou in 6 Days on a Budget (With Daily Costs)
Six days keeps the 5-day plan intact and adds a second, equally cheap day trip: Foshan, via a direct metro hop rather than a rail ticket. Prefer to stop after one day trip, see the 5-day plan ; want all three Pearl River Delta trips, take the 7-day version . Full city depth is in the Guangzhou budget guide .
Book these before you go:
- Canton Tower ticket : book online, since walk-up tickets can sell out on weekends.
- Pearl River night cruise : book at least a day ahead in peak season (Oct-Nov, Apr-May).
- A Foshan day tour : worth booking if you’d rather skip the DIY metro-and-taxi routing between Zumiao and Ip Man sites.
- Your hotel in Yuexiu or near Beijing Road : book 6 nights here rather than switching hotels for either day trip.

Day 1: Yuexiu arrival and orientation
Land at Baiyun Airport (CAN) and set up your Alipay or WeChat Pay transport QR code before you leave the terminal; Terminal 1 closed for good on 7 May 2026, so arrivals now route through T2 or the new T3, and the airport express (Metro Line 3) into Tianhe runs about 50-60 minutes for ¥7-14. Drop your bags in Yuexiu or near Beijing Road, then spend the afternoon on foot: Sacred Heart Cathedral is free and open until 5:30pm, Beijing Road pedestrian street is free and dense with dim sum, and Yuexiu Park (free, 6am-10pm) with its Five Rams Statue makes an easy loop before dinner. Eat congee or cheung fun off Beijing Road for under ¥30 a dish.
Day 2: Old Guangzhou and the river
Morning at the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall (¥10), one of the cheapest major sights in the country, for the carved wood and stone courtyards alone. Walk or take a short metro hop to Shamian Island (free) for an hour or two among the old European concession buildings, then double back through Liwan’s antique streets. In the evening, board a basic Pearl River night cruise (¥70-100; skip the ¥180-280 dinner tier unless you want the buffet) from Tianzi Wharf or the Canton Tower’s Fortune Wharf for the skyline lit up after dark.
Day 3: Canton Tower and Tianhe
Ascend the Canton Tower (base ticket around ¥150, combo tiers to ¥228; check current tiers on the tower’s own site ) in the morning before the queues build, and book online rather than walking up. Spend the afternoon in Tianhe’s Zhujiang New Town, where the Zaha Hadid-designed Opera House and the skyline are free to walk. For dinner, a mid-range dim sum chain like Dian Dou De runs ¥50-70 a person, roughly a third of what the historic, upscale Tao Tao Ju charges for the same style of meal.
Day 4: Baiyun Mountain and loose ends
Baiyun Mountain is the best-value morning in the city: ¥5 entry, with a ¥20-30 one-way cable car if you’d rather not hike the whole way. Come down by early afternoon and spend the rest of the day on Beijing Road or in Liwan’s markets, picking up anything skipped on Day 2. Use the afternoon to confirm your Guangzhou South departure time for tomorrow with enough buffer, since the station sits well outside the historic core.
Day 5: Shenzhen, a half-day city over the border
Take the high-speed rail from Guangzhou South to Shenzhen: the fastest G-trains cover it in about 29 minutes for ¥54-83 (check current schedules on Trip.com ), the cheapest and easiest day trip on this list. Confirm whether your plans point toward Futian (more central) or Shenzhen North before booking, since the two stations aren’t interchangeable. A half-day covers Shenzhen’s core sights comfortably, leaving the rest of the day free for a return to Guangzhou by early evening.
Day 6: Foshan, martial arts heritage and a cheap metro ride
Foshan is a direct, cheap hop on the Guangzhou Metro’s Guangfo Line, no HSR ticket needed. The Ancestral Temple (Zumiao), a working Daoist temple and museum complex, houses an Ip Man Memorial Hall on site, Ip Man having taught Bruce Lee Wing Chun. That combination makes an efficient half-day; skip Bruce Lee’s actual ancestral house in Shunde and the separate Bruce Lee Park unless a dedicated martial-arts pilgrimage is the point, since both sit well outside the Guangfo Line’s easy reach.
Is the Foshan day trip worth adding to 5 days?
Yes, if a cheap, low-effort half-day appeals: the Guangfo metro line makes Foshan a direct hop with no separate rail ticket to book. Zumiao and its on-site Ip Man Memorial Hall cover the highlights efficiently. Skip it only if martial-arts heritage specifically doesn’t interest you, since the rest of Foshan needs more time than a single metro day trip allows; background on the wider city is in the Guangzhou city guide .
How do you tell Foshan’s three Bruce Lee sites apart?
The Ip Man Memorial Hall sits inside the Zumiao (Ancestral Temple) complex, reachable by the Guangfo metro. Bruce Lee’s actual ancestral house is a separate site in Shunde District, about 60km from Guangzhou. Bruce Lee Park is a third, unrelated location with a large statue and small memorial hall. Only Zumiao’s Ip Man Hall fits comfortably into this itinerary’s half-day; Guangzhou’s official visitor portal has more on day-trip transit options if you want to plan further afield.
Book the Foshan tour link above only if you’d rather skip navigating Zumiao’s on-site layout solo; the DIY metro route costs a fraction of the price if you’re comfortable following signage.
