Hong Kong Day Trips in 3 Days on a Budget
Three days: Macau, an island, and one free Lantau day
Three days keeps the same first two legs as the 2-day plan , Macau then Cheung Chau, and adds a third day that costs almost nothing: Tai O, the stilt-house fishing village on the far side of Lantau from the Big Buddha. Day 1: Macau on the cheap bus, not the ferry
Ride the HZMB “Golden Bus” from the Hong Kong port, HK$65 during regular hours or HK$70 overnight, about 45 minutes plus immigration each way, less than a third of the ferry’s HK$194-242 fare. Walk the Ruins of St. Paul’s and Senado Square, the free core of the Portuguese-colonial old town, and eat a Portuguese egg tart near the square. Check current schedules on hzmb.gov.hk or hours on macaotourism.gov.mo before you head back on the same bus route.
Day 2: Cheung Chau, ferry and bike
Ferry from Central Pier 5, HK$16.70 weekday or HK$24.80 weekend on the ordinary boat, HK$32.90 or HK$47.60 on the fast ferry, 35-55 minutes each way. Rent a bike near the pier, check current sailings on Sun Ferry , hike the Mini Great Wall coastal trail and Cheung Po Tsai Cave, then have a seafood lunch harborside before the ferry back.
Day 3: Tai O, the free stilt village
Take a bus from Tung Chung MTR station (or from the Ngong Ping cable car area if you’re combining this with the city guide’s Big Buddha day) out to Tai O, a fishing village built on stilts over tidal flats on the far side of Lantau from Ngong Ping. Walking the boardwalks and the market costs nothing beyond the bus fare. Boat operators here advertise Chinese white dolphin sightings; the local population has been declining for years, so treat a sighting as a bonus rather than a reason to book the boat.
Is the dolphin-watching boat in Tai O worth it?
Only if you treat a sighting as a bonus rather than a guarantee. Declining local dolphin numbers mean many trips see nothing, so the real value of the boat ride is the view of the stilt houses from the water, not a wildlife guarantee. Walking the village for free covers most of what makes Tai O worth the trip.
Is 3 days enough for Hong Kong’s day trips?
It adds one genuinely free day to the 2-day sampler, which is the right move if budget matters more than ticking off every attraction. Disneyland and Shenzhen both still get cut at this length; step up to 4 days for the theme park or 7 days for the mainland crossing.
Save Tai O for a clear day if photos matter; the stilt houses and the tidal flats both look better in daylight than under the grey skies that show up more often outside the October-December window.
