Four days keeps the Warsaw-as-a-base spine from our 3-day plan , Lodz and Zelazowa Wola included, and adds Kampinos National Park, a free forest escape 25 to 30 minutes out by bus. Krakow still does not belong here. The fastest Pendolino runs 2h20 each way, most trains take 2h45 to 3 hours, and four days is still too tight to swallow that round trip without wrecking the schedule.

Day 1: Set Up Your Warsaw Base
Warsaw Chopin Airport sits about 10km from the center. Ride the S2 or S3 SKM train or bus 175 into town on the standard ZTM 75-minute ticket, 4.40 PLN ($1.15), and skip the touts at arrivals quoting 150 to 250 PLN for the same short ride. Before you unpack, register a PKP Intercity account so you are ready the moment tickets for your travel dates release, exactly 30 days out; the cheapest Super Promo fares on every route below sell out within hours. Spend what is left of the day on a free walk through the Old Town Market Square. Day 2: Lodz
PKP Intercity runs Warszawa Centralna to Lodz Fabryczna more than 30 times a day, with a few nonstop services covering it in about an hour and most others taking 1h15. Fares run 25 to 70 PLN ($7 to $18) one-way booked a few weeks out, with Super Promo tickets sometimes dropping to 25 to 29 PLN ($7 to $8). Spend the day at Manufaktura , a 19th-century textile factory turned shopping and museum complex, then walk Piotrkowska Street, Poland’s longest promenade, for street art, cafes and the converted courtyards of OFF Piotrkowska.
Day 3: Zelazowa Wola
Fryderyk Chopin’s birthplace sits 55km west of Warsaw, and there is no train station at the site itself; every route needs a connecting leg. Take a regional train to Sochaczew, 40 to 60 minutes, plus a short taxi, or use the Chopin Museum’s own seasonal bus (Monday to Thursday departs the museum at noon, back around 17:30; Friday to Sunday departs 10:00, back around 15:30; roughly May through September). A combined park, birthplace and exhibition ticket runs around 30 PLN ($8) individually, and is free on Wednesdays.
Day 4: Kampinos National Park
Take bus 708 from the M1 metro’s Mlociny terminus to Truskaw, about 25 to 30 minutes, or bus 210 to Izabelin; both run every 30 to 60 minutes on the same standard ZTM fare, 4.40 PLN ($1.15) for a 75-minute ticket, or bundle it into a 24-hour ticket, about 15 PLN ($4), if you are combining it with other transit that day. Entry to Kampinos National Park is free and there is no booking involved, easily the cheapest day on this whole itinerary. The draw is old-growth forest, dunes and wetlands, plus the Palmiry massacre memorial and museum documenting WWII partisan history, not a lightweight add-on. There is no bison here; that is Bialowieza, a much farther park entirely, and a genuinely common mixup worth avoiding. Does Krakow work as a day trip from Warsaw?
No. The fastest EIP Pendolino takes 2h20 each way and most trains run 2h45 to 3 hours, so a round trip alone eats 5 to 6 hours before you have seen anything. Auschwitz is a separate trip again, done from Krakow, not Warsaw. Treat Krakow as its own overnight, whatever length trip you are running.
Is Kampinos really free, no catches?
Yes. Entry has no ticket, no gate and no booking system; the only cost is the bus fare in and whatever food you bring or buy nearby. Compare that to Zelazowa Wola’s 30 PLN ($8) ticket or Lodz’s train fare, and Kampinos is the one day on this itinerary where the budget line is effectively zero.
