Even at five days, the fastest Pendolino runs 2h20 each way and most trains take 2h45 to 3 hours; that round trip belongs to a dedicated overnight, not a bolt-on day.
The route: Warsaw base setup, Lodz, Zelazowa Wola, Kampinos, then Torun, the longest single day-trip haul in the whole family. Day 1: Set Up Your Warsaw Base
Warsaw Chopin Airport sits about 10km from the center. Ride the S2 or S3 SKM train or bus 175 into town on the standard ZTM 75-minute ticket, 4.40 PLN ($1.15), and skip the touts at arrivals quoting 150 to 250 PLN for the same short ride. Day 2: Lodz
PKP Intercity runs Warszawa Centralna to Lodz Fabryczna more than 30 times a day, with a few nonstop services covering it in about an hour and most others taking 1h15. Fares run 25 to 70 PLN ($7 to $18) one-way booked a few weeks out, with Super Promo tickets sometimes dropping to 25 to 29 PLN ($7 to $8). Spend the day at Manufaktura , a converted 19th-century textile factory, then walk Piotrkowska Street, Poland’s longest promenade, for street art, cafes and the converted courtyards of OFF Piotrkowska.
Day 3: Zelazowa Wola
Fryderyk Chopin’s birthplace sits 55km west, with no train station at the site itself; take a regional train to Sochaczew, 40 to 60 minutes, plus a short taxi, or use the Chopin Museum’s own seasonal bus (Monday to Thursday noon, Friday to Sunday 10:00, roughly May through September). A combined park, birthplace and exhibition ticket runs around 30 PLN ($8), free on Wednesdays.
Day 4: Kampinos National Park
Take bus 708 from the M1 metro’s Mlociny terminus to Truskaw, about 25 to 30 minutes, or bus 210 to Izabelin, on the same standard ZTM fare. Entry to Kampinos National Park is free and there is no booking involved. The draw is old-growth forest, dunes and wetlands, plus the Palmiry massacre memorial documenting WWII partisan history; there is no bison here, that is Bialowieza, a much farther park entirely. Day 5: Torun
PKP Intercity runs Warszawa Centralna to Torun Glowny roughly every 2 to 3 hours; travel time runs 2h10 to 2h40 depending on whether you land an IC or a slower TLK service, there is no EIC or EIP on this route. One-way fares run 40 to 190 PLN ($11 to $50) depending on train type and how far ahead you book; budget 150 to 280 PLN ($39 to $74) round trip if you book a few weeks out. Torun’s UNESCO-listed Gothic old town and Copernicus’s birthplace museum are the draw, along with the city’s pierniki (gingerbread) tradition, workshops included. At 2h10 to 2h40 each way, this is the longest single day-trip haul in the whole itinerary; if your dates allow it, staying one night in Torun instead of racing back the same evening makes for a far less rushed visit. Does Krakow work as a day trip from Warsaw?
No. The fastest EIP Pendolino takes 2h20 each way and most trains run 2h45 to 3 hours, so a round trip alone eats 5 to 6 hours before you have seen anything. Auschwitz is a separate trip again, done from Krakow, not Warsaw. Treat Krakow as its own overnight; five days here is better spent on the four trips above than a rushed Krakow round trip.
Should Torun be an overnight instead of a day trip?
Honestly, it is a close call. At 2h10 to 2h40 each way, Torun is the one trip on this itinerary where an overnight genuinely improves the experience over racing for the last train. If your schedule only allows five days total, the day trip works, but do not schedule anything demanding the next morning.
Book the Torun train before the hotel for this leg; the cheapest Super Promo fares, released 30 days out, disappear long before rooms do.
