5 Best Nature Spots in Hangzhou on a Budget
1. West Lake
Free, the lake, the causeways, and Solitary Hill, no ticket booth anywhere. It’s a UNESCO World Heritage cultural landscape, listed in 2011 (the separate Grand Canal listing came in 2014). Walk the Su Causeway, built 1074 by the poet Su Dongpo, and the Bai Causeway, built 822 by Bai Juyi, two builders roughly 250 years apart. A boat out to Three Pools Mirroring the Moon, around ¥55-70, reaches the small island printed on the ¥1 note and the one view here you genuinely can’t get from shore.
2. Xixi National Wetland Park
The central zone is free and laced with canals and boardwalks; the quieter east and west zones cost around ¥80 combined if you want to go further in. It’s the easiest full break from temples and museums in the whole trip.
3. Longjing and Meijiawu tea hills
Free to wander among the terraced hillsides west of the lake, with sit-down tastings running roughly ¥10-80 a cup depending on grade. March through May is picking season, and the Mingqian flush, picked just before early-April Qingming, is the year’s most prized grade.
4. Feilai Feng grottoes
Wooded, hillside, and dotted with more than 300 rock carvings cut into the cliff face, including a well-known laughing Maitreya. Feilai Feng, next to Lingyin Temple, has been free since 1 December 2025, but both need a timed, real-name reservation booked 1-7 days ahead on the “杭州灵隐飞来峰” mini-program in WeChat or Alipay.
5. Moganshan (day trip)
A bamboo-hill retreat about 1-1.5 hours from Hangzhou by car, the genuine forest escape none of the lakeside spots above can offer. It suits a slow half-day or an overnight better than a rushed there-and-back, so budget accordingly if it’s the day you pick.
Timing it right
Spring, for the tea harvest and blossoms, and autumn, for osmanthus and the Qiantang tidal bore window near Haining/Yanguan, about an hour from central Hangzhou, are the most rewarding seasons for all five. Avoid Golden Week (1-7 October 2026), Labour Day (1-5 May 2026), Mid-Autumn (25-27 September 2026), and Chinese New Year, when even the free spots get crowded.
