A Romantic Break in Salzburg
A romantic weekend in Salzburg
Salzburg has the ingredients for a couples trip: a floodlit fortress, concert halls, old taverns and quiet ridge paths. The suggestions below follow the shape of a weekend, from a first evening to a final morning. Prices are 2026 figures or ranges, so confirm them when you book.
Friday evening: the riverside
Walk to the Makartsteg footbridge, where couples fasten engraved padlocks to the railings. From there the promenade along Franz-Josef-Kai looks across to the fortress as it is lit after dark. Leave dinner for later and take the view first.
Saturday morning: gardens and a slow breakfast
Mirabell Gardens are free and quietest early. Pegasus Fountain, the hedge theatre and the Dwarf Garden make good photo stops. Afterwards, take a coffee at Café Tomaselli on Alter Markt, which has been serving since 1700.
Saturday afternoon: up the cliff
Ride the Mönchsberg lift (EUR 3.40 single, EUR 4.80 return) and walk the ridge path for views over the roofs and the river. For a classic view, the Festungsbahn to Hohensalzburg costs about EUR 15.50 per adult with the Basic ticket, including the funicular.
Saturday evening: music and dinner
The Schlosskonzerte in the Marble Hall of Mirabell Palace put string quartets in a candlelit room. Tickets are about EUR 38 to 48. For dinner, St. Peter Stiftskulinarium claims to be among the oldest restaurants in Europe, with records going back to 803. Its Mozart Dinner Concert pairs a period-style menu with singers in costume, at roughly EUR 75 to 95 per person without drinks. Book both in advance.
Sunday: a lake or a terrace
Schloss Fuschl, a former archbishops’ hunting lodge, stands on a small peninsula at Lake Fuschl about 20 km east of the city. Its lakeside terrace is a calm place for lunch. If you would rather stay in town, the rooftop Steinterrasse on Hotel Stein at Steingasse 1 faces the fortress and cathedral domes and is best at sunset.
Season notes
- Hellbrunn’s park, with the glass gazebo from The Sound of Music, is free to walk and open daily in season; the gazebo is viewed from outside only.
- The Christkindlmarkt on Dom- und Residenzplatz is expected from about 19 November 2026 to 1 January 2027 (check the dates).
- Festival weeks from 17 July to 30 August 2026 make rooms expensive, so book early.
- Winter evenings are cold, so pack gloves for the bridge and the ridge.
Where to stay
Choose a hotel on the left bank near the cathedral for walking distance to concerts, or on the right bank near Linzer Gasse for a quieter street.
