Bali Walking Tours: Where It Works

Ubud’s main streets look walkable in a photo and feel like anything but on foot, narrow shoulders, constant scooter traffic, and sidewalks that come and go without warning. Bali is fundamentally a scooter-and-car island, so a walking-tours page here has to lead with that rather than pretend otherwise.
Campuhan Ridge Walk carries the category
This free, paved-then-grassy ridge path through rolling hills just outside central Ubud runs roughly 30-45 minutes one-way and is genuinely one of Bali’s best free activities. Go at or before sunrise, both for the light and to beat the heat that makes any longer walk unpleasant by mid-morning.
Sanur’s promenade, a genuinely different register
A flat, paved, largely shaded coastal path roughly 5km long, popular with walkers, runners, and cyclists at all hours. It faces east, so sunrise views with Mount Agung visible on clear days make an early start worthwhile, and it’s a calmer register than anything on the surf-heavy west or south coast.
Rice-field footpaths and short waterfall walks
Informal but genuinely walkable dirt and paved paths run through working rice terraces near Ubud and around Canggu’s Berawa and Tibubeneng paddies, usually free or with small donation points. Tegenungan waterfall, easy and paved, and Tibumana, quieter with a short real descent, both work as under-two-hour walking outings from Ubud rather than full day trips.
GuruWalk’s modest but real Ubud presence
A handful of free, tip-based guided walks currently run in Ubud, English-guided, 2-4 hours, covering Tirta Empul’s spring-water purification and the Art Market among other stops. See current Ubud walk listings on GuruWalk . If a listed itinerary adds a civet-coffee plantation stop, treat that specific stop with caution rather than an endorsement; the walk’s other anchors stand on their own.
Verdict: build an early morning around Campuhan or the Sanur promenade rather than trying to “walk” Ubud’s or Canggu’s town center, and treat any guided walking tour as a genuine bonus on top of those two free anchors, not a replacement for them. Browse guided rice-field walking tours on GetYourGuide if a guide adds value for the day. For the ticketed temples this page keeps separate, see the Bali sightseeing guide , and the 6-day Bali itinerary shows where an early walk fits against a longer trip.
