Bulgaria Activities for Every Season of the Year
Winter: snow and a mountain town
January belongs to the ski resorts and to the masked dancers of the Surva festival in Pernik. Bansko is the main ski town, with a one-day adult lift pass at €59 in peak weeks (27 December to the end of March) and €45 outside them. The gondola return is €27. Resorts publish fresh prices every season, so the Bansko ski price page is the place to confirm figures for the winter you plan to visit. For ready-made days out in any season, you can browse Bulgaria tours on Viator .
Spring: roses and monasteries
The Kazanlak Rose Festival falls on the first weekend of June, with petal picking at dawn, folk dancing and a parade. Late May is when the damask rose fields start to bloom. Kazanlak also holds a full-scale replica of its UNESCO Thracian tomb in Tyulbeto Park, about €5 for adults. Spring is a fine time for Rila Monastery too, where the courtyard and church are free and the museum is extra.
Summer: lakes, peaks and the sea
From late June to September, the Seven Rila Lakes trail is open, and the chairlift saves the steep start at €16 return or €11 one-way. It pauses for maintenance on the last Monday of each month and for some weeks in spring and autumn, so check the lift calendar . The Black Sea is warm and reliable from mid-June to mid-September, with diving at Sozopol and kayaking under the cliffs of Cape Kaliakra. August brings the Gela bagpipe contest in the Rhodopes on the first Saturday and the jazz festival in Bansko.
Autumn: quieter roads
By October the beach resorts thin out, and Sunny Beach is largely shut by the end of the month. This is a good time for towns that do not depend on the sea. Plovdiv’s old town is free to wander, Veliko Tarnovo’s Tsarevets fortress costs roughly €5 to €8, and Varna Archaeological Museum is €10 for adults. A ride on the Rhodope narrow-gauge train between Septemvri and Dobrinishte fills a rainy day, with timetables on the BDZ site .
Money, roads and rules
Bulgaria has used the euro since 1 January 2026. Drivers need an e-vignette for national roads, at €10 for a week or €6.60 for a weekend, bought online before you start. For pacing a longer stay, see the three-day Bulgaria plan .
Best month by interest
- Skiing: January and February.
- Roses: late May to early June.
- Hiking: July to mid-September.
- Sea swimming: July and August.
- Towns and museums: April, May, September and October.
Verdict: September is the strongest all-round month, with warm sea, open trails and thinner crowds. Whatever the month, book mountain lifts and coast hotels with free cancellation, because weather changes plans quickly.
