Philippines Attraction Tours: Book or Go Solo
Philippines attraction tours: book or go solo
Some Philippine attractions are easiest on a joiner tour that handles the vans and permits. Others cost less and feel better when you go alone. Here is how the main ones split.
Worth booking as a tour
Underground River, Palawan. The park is at Sabang, about two hours by van from Puerto Princesa, and the daily cap is 900 visitors, so permits matter. The independent route adds a ₱500 permit, ₱150 environmental fee, ₱100 audio guide and a boat of around ₱250 to ₱350. A joiner package from the city costs around ₱2,200 to ₱2,800 and covers the van, permits, audio guide and lunch. If you are short of time, the package is the sensible choice; browse Underground River tours and confirm that permits are included. Independent travellers should use the official city portal .
El Nido island circuits. Licensed boats run lettered circuits, and you choose by what you want to swim into. Tour A visits Big Lagoon, Secret Lagoon and Shimizu Island, at around ₱1,200 to ₱1,400. Tour C reaches Hidden Beach, Secret Beach and Matinloc Shrine, at about ₱1,400 to ₱1,600. Each trip carries the ₱400 eco-tourism development fee (valid 10 days) and ₱200 at each of Big Lagoon and Matinloc Shrine, so ask what is included. Kayak hire at the lagoons costs ₱300 to ₱600.
Coron. Operators sell packages that bundle the lake and lagoon fees, so compare what each includes rather than chasing individual entry prices. See the El Nido tourism office site for how licensed circuits work in Palawan.
Easy to do alone
- Chocolate Hills, Bohol. Hire a tricycle or driver and go to the Carmen complex: about 214 steps, open roughly 08:30 to 17:30, ₱150 for non-resident adults, ₱75 for children aged 6 to 12.
- Tarsier sanctuary, Corella. A small cash entry fee, with no flash and no touching. Go quiet.
- National Museum, Manila. Free for all visitors, open daily from 09:00 to 18:00. Check nationalmuseum.gov.ph for holiday closures.
- Boracay. Pay the ₱300 environmental fee once and ₱150 terminal fee each way at Caticlan jetty, then explore on your own.
Getting between attractions
Bohol is a separate island from Cebu, so the connection is the OceanJet fast ferry of about 2 hours, ₱880 tourist class, and not any bus. Palawan, Boracay and Bohol each need a flight or ferry and a night at least. Book flights and ferries early in the dry Amihan months, roughly November to April.
Safety and timing
Habagat and typhoon season run roughly June to November. The Coast Guard can stop boat services at short notice, so a tour booked for your last day is a risk. Life jackets are mandatory on bangkas. Carry cash; most attraction counters do not take cards. For warnings, see coastguard.gov.ph . Entry is visa-free for 30 days for most nationalities, and the free eTravel form at etravel.gov.ph is required.
Verdict: book the Underground River and El Nido circuits, and do Bohol and Manila by yourself. More planning ideas are on the multi-day trips page .
