Day Trips From Bali, Java and Jakarta
Because Indonesia is an archipelago rather than a driveable mainland, a genuine day trip only exists relative to a specific hub. What works from Yogyakarta doesn’t work from Jakarta, and neither works from Bali.
Out of Yogyakarta
Borobudur is 42 km northwest, about an hour and 15 minutes by road, and Prambanan is 50 km east, roughly an hour and a half; an 8-hour private car with driver covers both for around IDR 550,000-700,000. Southeast in Gunungkidul, Jomblang Cave lowers visitors 60 metres by rope into Grubug Cave to see its “Light of Heaven” sunbeam, capped at 80 people a day with a mandatory 9:30am arrival (IDR 500,000), and pairs well with Timang Beach’s hand-cranked cable gondola over the surf (IDR 200,000 gondola, IDR 100,000 suspension bridge). Out of South Bali
Speedboats from Sanur Harbor reach Nusa Penida in 40-45 minutes, IDR 150,000-200,000 each way, for a west-coast loop through Kelingking Beach’s T-Rex cliff, Broken Beach and Angel’s Billabong. Do not swim at Kelingking: shore-break waves and undercurrents there have drowned tourists, and the descent down the crumbling 150-metre cliff path takes 1.5-2 hours round trip; view it from the clifftop instead. Closer to Ubud, Pura Ulun Danu Bratan on Lake Bratan (IDR 75,000 entry) and the UNESCO-listed Jatiluwih rice terraces (IDR 50,000 entry) sit about 1.5 hours away and show off Bali’s centuries-old subak irrigation system.
Out of Jakarta
Speedboats from Marina Ancol Pier reach the Thousand Islands (Kepulauan Seribu) in 1-2 hours depending on the island, round-trip fares IDR 350,000-800,000, for snorkeling and mangrove conservation without the city’s traffic. Bogor’s Kebun Raya botanical garden is closer still, 60 minutes south on the KRL Commuterline from Jakarta Kota or Manggarai (fare IDR 5,000): 87 hectares of grounds dating to 1817 around the Presidential Palace, entry IDR 25,500.
What doesn’t fit in a day
Tana Toraja requires a flight into Makassar followed by an 8- to 9-hour, 320 km mountain drive, which makes it a 3- to 4-day trip on its own, not a day excursion from Bali or Jakarta.
The verdict
The Yogyakarta temple pairing is the most reliable day trip on this list, since it depends only on road traffic; Nusa Penida and the Thousand Islands both depend on sea conditions, so keep a backup date free. For overnight versions of these same regions, see the multi-day trips guide .
