Multi-Day Trips Across Indonesia's Islands
The trips that reward extra days in Indonesia are the ones that cross something, a strait, a caldera, a tectonic boundary, rather than the ones that circle a single island slowly.
Java by rail: two volcanoes in 7-10 days
Jakarta to Bandung runs on the Whoosh high-speed line in 30-45 minutes, then executive trains cross West Java’s rice terraces to Yogyakarta for three days centered on Borobudur, Prambanan and the Kraton. From there, rail continues to Probolinggo or Malang for the Mount Bromo sunrise jeep run, then to Banyuwangi for the Kawah Ijen midnight blue-fire hike, ending with a 30-minute ASDP ferry across the Bali Strait into Gilimanuk (IDR 10,000). Komodo by phinisi, 3 days and 2 nights
A traditional wooden phinisi schooner sails out of Labuan Bajo through Kelor Island and Manjarite’s reef, anchoring off Kalong Island as thousands of fruit bats lift off the mangroves at sunset. Day two brings Padar Island’s sunrise hike, Pink Beach, a ranger-led dragon trek on Komodo or Rinca, and Manta Point; day three loops past Kanawa Island’s reef before returning to port. Mount Rinjani, 3-4 days to the summit
Lombok’s 3,726-metre volcano is climbed from Senaru or Sembalun village. Day one crosses savanna to the Sembalun crater rim at 2,639 metres to camp above the caldera; day two starts a 2am push across loose scree for sunrise at the summit, then drops to the Segara Anak crater lake and its hot springs; day three exits through rainforest via the Senaru route. Licensed guides and porters are legally required, booked through registered operators at rinjaninationalpark.id , with packages running IDR 2,500,000-4,000,000 per person. The whole national park closes every year from 1 January to 31 March for monsoon safety, reopening 1 April, so the trip has to sit outside that window.
The verdict
