Bulgaria Road Trip Planner: Rila, Pirin, Plovdiv
Why drive
Bulgaria’s best multi-day travel is by car. Mountain stops sit far apart, and public transport is thin around Rila and Pirin. A circuit through the southwest works in five days, and each leg is two to three hours at most.
Before you set off
Bulgaria has no toll booths. Cars need an electronic vignette on national roads, which costs €10 for a week or €6.60 for a weekend. Buy it online at bgtoll.bg before you drive, as cameras read plates. Ask your rental firm whether one is already active. Prices are in euros, and nothing else is accepted. For hotels along the route, you can compare Bansko stays on Booking.com .
The circuit
- Sofia to Rila Monastery. About 117 km, two to two and a half hours. The courtyard and church cost nothing, the museum costs extra and modest dress is expected. Sleep nearby if you want the courtyard quiet after the tour buses leave.
- Rila Monastery to the Seven Rila Lakes. Drive to the Panichishte lift station. Adult chairlift fares are €16 return and €11 one-way. Maintenance pauses happen in spring, in autumn and on the last Monday of each month, so check the official dates . The walking season is late June to September.
- Lakes to Bansko. Follow the Struma valley south to the Pirin foothills. In winter, a day pass is €59 at peak and €45 off-peak. In summer, Bansko is the base for walks toward Mount Vihren at 2,914 metres.
- Bansko to Plovdiv. The old town’s streets are free, and the hill walk up Nebet Tepe is the best of the city. Leave the car at your hotel and walk.
- Plovdiv back to Sofia. The BDZ train takes about two and a half hours for roughly €5 to €8, which makes a car return unnecessary if you drop the vehicle in Sofia.
Extending the loop
Add Veliko Tarnovo for days six and seven. It is about three hours from Sofia by road, and Tsarevets fortress tickets are roughly €5 to €8. The Black Sea is better as a separate beach week from mid-June to mid-September, not squeezed in as a last day.
Seasonal advice
- Summer: the whole circuit works, and lake hiking is open.
- Winter: replace the lakes with skiing, and check road conditions before you leave.
- Shoulder months: keep a museum or old-town plan for days when a lift is paused.
For ideas on how to pace the days, the three-day Bulgaria plan shows a shorter cut.
Verdict: five days is enough, and the lakes day is the one to protect. Start each driving day before 09:00 and keep fuel above half in the mountains.
