Day Trips in Bulgaria: Monastery, Rocks and Roses
One capital, four very different days
Pick a day trip by what you want to see, and the rest follows. From Sofia you can reach a monastery, a rock fortress, a rose valley and Europe’s oldest continuously inhabited city, each in its own long day.
For spiritual calm: Rila Monastery
At 117 km south of Sofia, Rila Monastery takes about two to two and a half hours each way. Entry to the courtyard and church is free, the museum costs about €4 and a pass for all exhibitions about €10. Covered shoulders and knees are expected. The monastery’s official travel page notes that regular public transport has stopped, so go by car or on a group tour. Tours from Sofia often cost about €30 to €40, and you can browse Rila day tours on GetYourGuide to compare.
For landscapes: Belogradchik
Red and yellow sandstone towers up to 200 metres high rise behind a Roman and Ottoman fortress. It lies about 170 km northwest of Sofia, around three hours each way, so this is a full day. Adult entry is near €7.50, with longer summer hours. Walkers get the best light in late afternoon.
For flowers and tombs: the Rose Valley
Kazanlak is about two and a half hours east. The damask rose fields bloom from late May into June, and the town’s festival is on the first weekend of June. Kazanlak’s UNESCO Thracian tomb is represented by a full-scale replica in Tyulbeto Park, at about €5. Outside the rose season the trip is less compelling, so it suits spring.
For old stones: Plovdiv
Plovdiv is about 145 km from Sofia, roughly 1 hour 45 by car. Trains take roughly two and a half hours for about €5 to €8, and coaches are faster at higher fares. The old town is free to walk, with Roman remains and National Revival mansions.
For mountains: Seven Rila Lakes
About 90 km from Sofia, around an hour and a half to Panichishte. The chairlift is €16 return with seasonal pauses, and the official lift page lists the days it runs. Walking the lakes is a late-June to September plan.
Driving rules
Self-drivers need an e-vignette on national roads. A weekly one is €10, a weekend one €6.60, and bgtoll.bg sells them online. There are no toll booths, so cameras do the checking. Pay for everything in euros.
Matching a trip to your time
- One free day: Rila Monastery.
- Summer only: Seven Rila Lakes.
- No car: Plovdiv by train.
- Late spring: Kazanlak and the roses.
Verdict: Rila Monastery is the best day trip from Sofia, and Plovdiv wins if you do not want to drive. Leave Belogradchik for a night away, not a rushed day. For a weekend, the four-day Bulgaria plan links these stops sensibly.
