Cable Car, Wine and Rafting in Armenia
Travel advice: UK FCDO guidance covers parts of Armenia. It advises against all travel within 5 km of the whole eastern border with Azerbaijan, and along the M16/H26 road between Ijevan and Noyemberyan. The US advisory is Level 2 and says not to travel to the Azerbaijan border region. The activities below are away from those zones. Read the current wording at gov.uk and travel.state.gov , and keep to main roads in Syunik and Tavush.
Armenia rewards a plan built around opening days. Many museums close on Monday, and the best outdoor activities need a day each. All prices are in Armenian dram (AMD); allow roughly 370 to 390 AMD to the dollar. Where a price comes from a secondary source it is marked “about”.
Indoor and city activities in Yerevan
- Cascade and Cafesjian Center (10 Tamanyan Street): the stairway is free to climb, with about 570 steps and escalators inside. Galleries are open Friday to Sunday, 10:00 to 20:00. Guided tours cost 10,000 AMD per group and need advance booking. Details: cafesjian.mus.am .
- Matenadaran (53 Mashtots Avenue): a museum of ancient manuscripts, open Tuesday to Saturday, 10:00 to 17:50. Adults pay 2,000 AMD, ages 6 to 18 pay 1,000 AMD. Guided tours start at 5,000 AMD. Prices: matenadaran.am .
- Parajanov Museum: open every day, 10:30 to 18:00, adults 1,500 AMD. Prices: parajanovmuseum.am .
Outdoors
- Wings of Tatev cable car: 5,752 m between Halidzor and Tatev Monastery, about 12 minutes each way. It runs Tuesday to Sunday. Summer fares (March to November) are 6,500 AMD one way and 9,000 AMD return; in winter they drop to 4,000 and 5,500 AMD. Under 140 cm tall, a child pays 1,000 AMD. The ride can stop for weather or technical faults, and tickets are non-refundable. Reaching the station takes a Goris minibus, then a taxi; a night in Goris breaks up the journey. Official timetable: tatever.am .
- Rafting on the Debed: the only commercial rafting in the country, in Lori province near Tumanyan, around 3 hours from Yerevan. A common trip is 11 km, 1.5 to 2 hours, 12,000 AMD per person, minimum age 14. Difficulty runs from class 3 to 4 depending on the spring flow, and the season runs roughly May to autumn. Operator: Rafting Armenia .
Wine
- Areni: Hin Areni has tasting rooms in the village and beside Areni-1 Cave; the Areni Wine Factory was founded in 1994. Ask the price of a tasting before you book. The cave is an excavation of an ancient winemaking site, so do not expect a tasting bar there. More: hinareniwine.am .
- Yerevan Wine Days: held each June. In 2026 it covered 5 to 7 June across Saryan, Tumanyan and Moskovyan streets. Look for the current ticket price in event notices (Armenpress ).
A weekly plan
Monday is the day to ride the Cascade, visit the Parajanov Museum or take a day trip, since the Matenadaran and the Wings of Tatev are closed. Tuesday to Saturday suits the manuscript museum. Save a weekend morning for the Cascade galleries, which are open only Friday to Sunday. Book guided activities on GetYourGuide if you prefer a packaged option.
