Fort Royal on Île Sainte-Marguerite
The fortress dates from the 17th century. Its museum is named after the Man in the Iron Mask, the prisoner kept on the island until 1698. Opening is daily from 10:00 to 17:45 between June and September. Between October and May the museum shuts on Mondays, closes for lunch from 13:15 to 14:15 and finishes at 16:45 in winter or 17:45 in April and May. Under-18s and students under 26 enter free, and everyone does on the first Sunday of the month from November to March. Last entry is 30 minutes before closing. The island ferries run from the old port and take about 15 minutes; Trans Côte d’Azur, Horizon and Riviera Lines all serve it.
Saint-Honorat
Planaria runs the only boats to this abbey island, from Quai des Îles. The monks live and work here, so the tone is quiet. You can enter the fortified monastery for free, taste the wines the monks make, and book lunch at La Tonnelle online. Check the return time at the quay: the last boats leave in the afternoon or early evening depending on the season, and storms cancel sailings. The island’s own site posts notices.
The Palais and the Castre
The Palais tour is in English at 15:30 or in French at 15:00, from the tourist office, with no suitcases allowed. Book on the Palais tour page . The museum in Le Suquet was the Musée de la Castre and holds world ethnography and Provençal art in the castle of the Lérins monks. It does not allow prams or large bags.
Perfume houses in Grasse
By train, Grasse takes about 17 to 25 minutes. Fragonard’s historic factory is free to visit. Molinard has a free visit and a longer perfume workshop.
