Chiang Mai Day Trips: Peaks, Falls, Villages
Northern Thailand’s mountains and valleys make Chiang Mai one of the easiest cities in the country to base a series of day trips from, as long as the distance and drive time actually fit inside a day.
Doi Inthanon National Park
Thailand’s highest peak, 2,565 meters, sits 100 km south along Highway 108 and 1009, roughly 1.5-2 hours by car. The Ang Ka cloud-forest boardwalk runs 10-15°C cooler than the city even in hot season, and the Twin Royal Pagodas (100 THB separate entry) sit close to the thundering Wachirathan Waterfall. Foreign adults pay 300 THB to enter the park, children pay 150 THB, and a small vehicle fee applies. The 2.8 km Kew Mae Pan ridge trail needs a mandatory Karen guide (200 THB per group) and closes June 1 through October 31 each year for the rainy season. Bua Tong Sticky Waterfalls
Sixty kilometers north in Mae Taeng district, about 90 minutes each way, Bua Tong’s limestone tiers hold a mineral coating that grips bare feet, so most visitors climb the cascade itself rather than just view it from the bank. An ethical elephant day
Elephant Nature Park sits in the same Mae Taeng valley. Visits here are observation-only, watching rescued elephants forage and bathe themselves from elevated skywalks, with no riding and no tourist-led scrubbing on offer; a full day with transfers and a plant-based lunch runs around 2,500 THB for an adult and 1,250 THB for a child. Chiang Rai and the White Temple
The full round trip is 180 km and 3.5-4 hours each way on Highway 118, meaning 7-8 hours of driving against roughly 3.5 hours on the ground. Foreign admission to Wat Rong Khun (the White Temple) is 100 THB, usually paired with the free Wat Rong Suea Ten (Blue Temple) and the 80 THB Baan Dam museum. It’s viable as a day if there’s no other option in your schedule, but an overnight in Chiang Rai turns the same trip into two relaxed days instead of one exhausting one. Mae Rim’s craft and garden villages
Thirty kilometers northwest, Mae Rim mixes local artisan workshops, fruit orchards open for tastings, and the Queen Sirikit Botanic Garden’s canopy walkway (100 THB adult, 50 THB child, plus a 100 THB vehicle fee). It’s an easier half day than the mountain trips above and pairs well with a cooking class back in the city.
What doesn’t fit in a day
