The Mae Hong Son Loop, Day by Day
The Mae Hong Son Loop is Chiang Mai Province’s signature multi-day trip, and its numbers are the point: 600 km, 1,864 curves, and a genuine 4 to 5 days behind the wheel or on a motorbike. Treat it as a road trip where the driving is the attraction, not an obstacle between stops.
Day 1: Chiang Mai to Pai
Highway 1095 covers 762 curves in about 3.5 hours to Pai, a small mountain town that only works as an overnight base, never a day trip. Time the drive to arrive by mid-afternoon, leaving daylight for Pai Canyon at sunset, where narrow red-earth ridges drop away on both sides of the walking path.
Day 2: Pai to Mae Hong Son
The route passes Tham Lod cave, where a bamboo raft carries visitors through the cavern past stalactites and swifts nesting in the ceiling. The day ends in Mae Hong Son town, in time for sunset at Wat Phra That Doi Kong Mu, a hilltop temple overlooking the valley.
Day 3: Mae Hong Son to Mae Sariang
Via Khun Yuam, this stretch is quieter than the first two days, running past Shan-style wooden temples along the river. It is a good day to slow the pace after two long driving days.
Day 4: Mae Sariang to the Doi Inthanon area
Highway 108 climbs back toward Chiang Mai’s mountain district; overnighting at a lodge near Doi Inthanon sets up the final day without a long drive on summit morning.
Day 5: Doi Inthanon and back to Chiang Mai
A morning at Thailand’s highest peak, 2,565 meters, closes the loop: the Twin Royal Pagodas, Wachirathan Waterfall, and the Kew Mae Pan cloud-forest trail if the season allows it (seasonal dates from the Department of National Parks , open November 1 to May 31 only). Park entry is 300 THB for foreign adults. A shorter alternative: 3 days without the loop
If five days is too long, a 3-day version stays closer to the city: Old City temples and Doi Suthep on day one, Elephant Nature Park’s observation-only sanctuary in Mae Taeng on day two (elephantnaturepark.org ), and Doi Inthanon on day three.
