Ecuador Attraction Tours, Museums to Tortoises
Safety notice for travellers, October 2026: Check two government sources before booking Ecuador: the UK FCDO page and the US State Department advisory . At the time of writing the FCDO advises against all but essential travel to the coastal provinces of Esmeraldas, Manabí, Santa Elena, Guayas, El Oro, Los Ríos and Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas (airside transit at Guayaquil airport is excepted) and to the 20 km Colombian border strip, which takes in Lago Agrio. The US rates the country Level 2 overall, with Level 3 and Level 4 areas named inside it. A 60-day state of exception that began on 15 September 2026 covers eight provinces, Pichincha and Quito among them, and curfews have returned more than once this year. The highlands, Cuenca and the Galápagos fall outside the FCDO regions. Even there, plan around muggings, bag snatching, express kidnapping after street-hailed taxis and heavy El Niño rain and landslides. Everything on this page concerns places outside the warned areas.
Attraction tours in Ecuador usually mean a guided half day or full day built around one site. This page lists the ones with the clearest published details, so you can decide which to book and which to visit on your own. Check figures before you travel, since several come from operator and press listings.
Mitad del Mundo complex, near Quito
- Entry: US$5.00 for adults, US$2.50 for children and seniors.
- Hours: 09:00 to 17:00 on weekdays, 09:00 to 18:00 at weekends (official site ).
- On site: a 30 m monument, a planetarium and museums covering Guayasamín, beer and trains.
- Good to know: the monument marks the equator in the popular sense, and GPS puts the true line about 240 m north. Museo Solar Intiñan, a short walk away, charges about US$5 and performs water, egg and strength tricks that are entertainment rather than physics. Quitsato, near Cayambe, is the site reported to sit on the true line.
Quito churches by guided walk
- Compañía de Jesús: about US$5 to 6, no photographs inside, reported free on the first Sunday of the month.
- San Francisco convent museum: about US$6.
- Basílica del Voto Nacional: about US$2 for the church and about US$2 to 4 for the towers, which have steep stairs and ladders.
Keep to daylight, dress respectfully and remember that all three are in use for worship.
Santa Cruz tortoise centre
The Fausto Llerena Breeding Center offers a Park Directorate tour called the Tortoise Route, first at 08:00 and last at 16:45, at about US$10 with a guide. Agencies now reserve ahead. Free admission applies to the nearby Charles Darwin Research Station exhibition hall, open 08:00 to 18:00 daily (Darwin Foundation ). Foreign adults pay a US$200 park fee at the airport on arrival, and foreign children under 12 pay US$100.
Cuenca and the toquilla hat
The toquilla straw hat’s weaving tradition joined UNESCO’s intangible heritage list in 2012 (UNESCO ). Cuenca and the coastal towns of Montecristi and Jipijapa are the traditional centres. The Homero Ortega factory-museum is part of some half-day city tours, and one listing shows free entry. Hats sold as Panama hats were never made in Panama.
Alausí train
Tours combining the Nariz del Diablo train with a night in Alausí or Riobamba make sense, as Alausí is 3 to 4 hours by road from Cuenca. Tickets for foreign adults are US$30 plus VAT, Thursday to Sunday only.
Yasuní lodge package
Napo Wildlife Center lists US$2,000 for four nights in a standard double (confirm whether per person), reached by LATAM flight to Coca and a motorised canoe. Take local advice and move in daylight with an official guide, as the FCDO suggests for Napo River travel.
