Edale and Kinder Scout
Hope Valley line trains run about hourly from Piccadilly. Kinder Scout is high moorland with peat bogs, fast changing cloud and cold wind. Take a map or offline route, boots and waterproofs, and head down if you cannot see the path.
Liverpool
The Royal Albert Dock, the Beatles Story and the Museum of Liverpool are the main stops. The city has not been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2021. Tate Liverpool’s dock building has been shut since 2023, with a free display at RIBA North. The Maritime and International Slavery museums have been closed since January 2025.
Chester
Walk the Roman city walls, browse the two level Rows and see the cathedral. Chester Zoo needs its own day and its own ticket.
Hebden Bridge
A canal and market town in Calderdale with Hardcastle Crags, a National Trust woodland, close by.
Quarry Bank, Styal
The mill sits by the River Bollin. Adult GBP 24.00, child GBP 12.00 and family GBP 60.00 from 1 March 2026, free for National Trust members. The Apprentice House is only visited on a guided tour. From 2 November to 12 February the site closes on Mondays and Tuesdays.
Buxton
The Georgian spa town of Buxton is about an hour away by train and suits a slow afternoon. Trains run less often than to Edale, so look at the timetable before choosing it.
Tips
- Leave early in winter, as daylight is short in the hills.
- Check rail fares for your travel date before you buy.
- Carry a charged phone and tell someone your route if you walk alone on the moors.
