Manchester Long Weekend and Week Ideas
Manchester suits a long weekend in the city, with a few days more if you add trips out. Opening days drive the order here. Prices are in pounds sterling (GBP).
Three days in the city
Day 1, Wednesday to Saturday. Because the John Rylands Library on Deansgate opens only then, put the library and Castlefield Viaduct (Wednesday to Sunday) on this day. Add the Science and Industry Museum and the People’s History Museum, which is closed on Tuesdays.
Day 2. Take a stadium tour: Old Trafford from about GBP 28 or the Etihad from about GBP 28. Old Trafford tours do not run on first-team home matchdays. Then ride the Metrolink to Salford Quays for the Lowry and the Imperial War Museum North.
Day 3. Manchester Museum (not Monday), the National Football Museum, Manchester Cathedral, then a pre-booked Chetham’s Library tour. The Town Hall is closed for restoration with completion targeted for spring 2027.
Days 4 and 5
- A day of hill walking from Edale, about 40 minutes by train.
- A day in Liverpool, about 35 to 55 minutes by train.
Seasonal note
The Christmas Markets open on 6 November across ten city centre sites. Most close on 22 December, and Albert Square runs into early January.
Wet weather swaps
If rain sets in on a walking day, swap in the Central Library, the National Football Museum or the free galleries at Manchester Museum. If a day lands on a Monday, move Manchester Museum to another day and use the Science and Industry Museum, which opens every day. On a Tuesday, swap the People’s History Museum for another stop.
Costs
- Bee Network buses: GBP 2 adult single, GBP 5 adult day ticket.
- Metrolink one-day anytime travelcard, all zones: GBP 7.10. Off-peak, all zones: GBP 4.90, valid from 09:30 on weekdays.
- Fares are frozen through 2026.
Where to base yourself
The centre around Piccadilly, Deansgate and the Northern Quarter keeps most sights within a short walk or tram ride. Piccadilly station is the main hub for trains to the Peak District and Liverpool, so a hotel near it saves time on the early starts. Victoria station is closer to the cathedral quarter and serves some Liverpool and Calderdale trains.
