Family Days Out in Manama, Bahrain
Check before you travel, October 2026. Iranian missiles and drones hit Bahrain from 28 February 2026. A ceasefire began on 8 April 2026 and has mostly held, though violations have been reported and there have been later drone and cyber incidents. Flights and the King Fahd Causeway have been shut with little warning. Read the FCDO page for Bahrain and the US travel advisory , confirm cover with your insurer, and confirm your flights with the airline before you pay for anything.
Setting up a family trip
Bahrain is easy with children: distances are short, card payments are common, and there is a good mix of wildlife, museums, beaches and indoor play. The weather decides the plan. Between November and March mornings and afternoons are comfortable, but from June to September the heat is severe, so put anything outdoors at the start or end of the day and use air-conditioned venues in between.
Wildlife at the Mohammed bin Zayed Nature Reserve
This reserve, formerly known as Al Areen Wildlife Park, lies in southern Bahrain near Zallaq. Drive time from Manama is roughly 35 minutes. It covers about 7 square kilometres and was set up in 1976 to protect native Arabian species. Children ride an enclosed, air-conditioned bus past oryx, gazelles, ibex and ostriches, and then walk through the aviary and waterbird pond. Opening hours are reported as 08:00 to 16:00 Saturday to Thursday with shorter hours on Fridays. Adult tickets cost about BD 1 to 2, and you should confirm before travelling.
Museum time
The Bahrain National Museum suits curious children. Dioramas show pearl divers working from wooden dhows, a traditional wedding and market craftsmen, and the Dilmun seals carry carved animals. Adult entry is about BD 2 and children under 6 are reported free, so check at the desk. Closed Tuesdays.
Water and sand
- Lost Paradise of Dilmun (also named Janat Dilmun) is the country’s only water park and it is open. Check the day’s opening and any height limits at the gate.
- Al Dar Island is a short boat ride from the Sitra jetty. Adults pay BD 6 on weekdays or BD 8 on weekends including the boat and a BD 2 food voucher, and children pay BD 3 or BD 5.
- Al Jazayer Beach in Zallaq has marked swimming areas, sunbeds, changing rooms and snack kiosks. A modest entry fee, about BD 2 at weekends, may apply.
Always supervise children in the water and carry sun protection.
Karting and arcades
At Bahrain International Karting Circuit in Sakhir, 15-minute arrive-and-drive sessions run on a 1.414 km track. Junior karts take children aged 7 to 12 at 125 cm or taller, and riders aged 13 and up join adult sessions. Ask the circuit for current prices.
For rainy-day or summer afternoons, Magic Planet at City Centre Bahrain and Magic Island at Seef Mall provide rides, bowling and climbing walls. The old water attraction at City Centre has been shut for several years.
Family logistics
- A taxi, Uber or Careem works for short trips, with a typical central fare of BD 2 to 5. Economy rental cars cost around BD 6 to 15 a day.
- Cultural sites ask for modest dress, and public affection should be discreet.
- Do not photograph military or security installations.
